Description:
Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1980. 164 pp, large 8vo (10 1/4"). 70 watercolors by E.J. Revell. "In seventy exquisite watercolours E.J. Revell has captured the beauty of plants found by early travellers in North America - from Ash to Wintergreen, Bittersweet to Wappatoo, the common Bedstraw and the uncommon Camass, the edible Fiddlehead and the ubiquitous Dandelion. Accompanying each painting are quotations from a variety of explorers and settlers, describing the plants and reflecting the practical, aesthetic, and botanic interests of newcomers in different parts of the country. The result is an intriguing mixture of native knowledge and frontier wisdom which provides a picture of life in a new land." Dust jacket has some darkening to panels and edges, minor edge wrinkling.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good+. Illus. by E.J. Revell..

New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1989. 191 pp, 12" H. Bright red cloth with blindstamped Babar on front board, white lettering on spine, yellow endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w and colour reproductions. "Babar was created by the painter Jean de Brunhoff, who produced the first seven books of the series between 1931 and 1937, the year of his untimely death. In 1946 his artist son Laurent took up where Jean had left off. He wrote and illustrated his first Babar book when he was twenty-one and has now done thirty Babar books. In bringing Babar back, Laurent was holding on to an enchanted childhood as well as keeping alive the legacy of his beloved father. The elephant actually had been the invention of his mother, Cecile, who thought up the first adventure one evening as a bedtime story for Laurent and his younger brother, Mathieu. In 'The Art of Babar' (the author) has worked with Laurent de Brunhoff to recapture aspects of the artist's childhood in… Read More

London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1940. 210 pp + ads, 8vo (8 3/8" H). 8 b&w plates by Edward Ardizzone. "The first part is made up of sketches of the B.E.F. which were published in Paris each week from the beginning of November (1939). I had been asked by the Army Council to accompany the British forces as French official eye-witness. I was delighted to have the opportunity of joining my old friends again. We were full of hope. I spent at G.H.Q., and with the armies, several happy months. When I read what I wrote then, in perfect good faith, I wonder why and how we did not realize at once that our numbers were too small, our equipment scanty, our defence inadequate. As a matter of fact, we did realize it from time to time, but there was a conspiracy of optimism. If these sketches are now still worth reading, it will be mainly because of their significant omissions. The second part of this book is a diary of The Thirty Days War. Most of it was written, not for publication, but for my… Read More

Description:
London: Walker Books, 1987. 72 pp, 10 3/4" H. Colour illustrations. "In words and pictures of rare imaginative power, this book tells the story of a very special year in the life of a medieval priory - the year when the mysterious Blemyahs (beings with their faces on their chests) came. Working by night, unseen by the Brothers, the Blemyahs carved the misericords under the seats in the Quire stalls - images of Adam and Eve, Noah, the Three Kings and many others, which came to life as they were carved. And all through the year there was trouble, caused by the youngest Blemyah's most knotty creation - the cheeky, ever-meddlesome imp, Ruffin - who was finally cured of his naughtiness by the touch of a new-born Baby's hand." Very light edge wear - mainly on bottom edge of boards, slight lean to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good+. Illus. by Juan Wijngaard..

New York: Arco, 1984. 336 pp, 10 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w. "A comprehensive reference work of twentieth-century book illustration, this dictionary covers over eight hundred illustrators whose work was first published in Britain. The entries are arranged alphabetically, and each includes biographical information, a brief discussion of subjects and style, lists of periodicals to which the artist has contributed and of books illustrated, and a detailed reference bibliography. Some three hundred and fifty of the entries are accompanied by an example of the illustrator's work. The scope of the dictionary is so wide that it includes not just influential illustrators ranging from Eric Gill to Mabel Lucie Attwell but also a multitude of less celebrated figures and artists whose work falls only in part within the book's limits of subjects and timespan. New York: Franklin Watts, 1968. 135 pp, 11" H. Profusely illustrated in colour throughout. "Philip Turner has presented the Bible story in chronological order, as a consecutive narrative, giving the reader a clear outline of the Bible as a whole. In bringing home to young readers the truths behind the historical, poetical and prophetic books that make up the Bible, he communicates the strength and beauty of man's faith in God. Brian Wildsmith's illuminating, striking and sensitive illustrations complement the dignity and simplicity of Philip Turner's text and help to make this book an admirable introduction to the Bible itself." now protected in removable mylar sleeve. Fading and spotting to the colour on top of the text block with some slight migration of the colour into the pages, a small area of surface paper loss at the top of both inside hinges, minor edge wear to the boards.
