Ottawa: Ministry of Environment, 1985. Unpaginated, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). 113 colour photographs, plus three maps. "Beside the Columbia Icefield, in Banff National Park, lies a narrow valley. One end of the valley is a barren arctic waste, newly formed by the retreat of the ice ages. Gradually, it grades into an alpine meadow and then into a northern coniferous forest. The valley and the glaciers around it gell the story of how the landscapes of Canada were formed, from the great ice ages to this summer's flowers. Partway down the valley there is a cave mouth, the sole entrance to an enormous complex of vaults and passage-ways under the valley and glacier. In the cold darkness of the Castleguard caves water has been forming and enlarging passages for hundreds of thousands of years. Glistening white stalactites, among the purest in the world, have been growing for millennia. Come celebrate Castleguard with the adventurers who have explored and photographed the… Read More

Description:
Montreal: McCord Museum of Canadian History, 1994. 127 pp, 9 3/4" H x 12 1/8" D. Bilingual text (French/English). Profusely illustrated with reproductions of Notman's photographs. "William Notman invited over a hundred people to come and don brightly coloured costumes representing various themes and epochs in order to create a composite photograph. They dressed as Scottish couples in Highland costume, Elizabethan ladies and courtiers, soldiers and sailors, a voyageur, an 'Indian' and a pilgrim father. The occasion was a skating carnival in the Victoria rink staged in honour of Prince Arthur, who was stationed in Montreal as an officer-in-training in 1870. The finished picture consisted of individual photographs of one hundred and fifty figures cut out and pasted on to a painted background. When we look at composite photographs today, it is sometimes with a certain amusement at what we may perceive as a naive idea, combined with a sense of wonder at the magnitude of… Read More

London, Ontario: Binea Press, 2007. 120 pp, 12 1/8" H. "These spectacular photographs by Richard Bain serve to celebrate Fanshawe College by depicting current scenes of our campuses, its students and staff. Having been compiled during our 40th year, the photographs suggest the incredible diversity of education that occurs at Fanshawe as well as the emerging beauty of its campuses in all seasons. The work and accomplish- ment of students learning a practical skill is frequently depicted and is truly exciting to experience. In addition, this commemorative book provides a short public history of the first 30 years of Fanshawe's development ably written by Hank Daniszewski. Hank was able to speak with people, both staff and students, who were at the College at its inception in 1967." Very minor bump to bottom edge of front board. N.P.: Mercury Press, 1993. Unpaginaged, oblong (7 5/16" H x 11 3/16" D). B&w photographs by Reuben R. Sallows (1876-1937) who worked in the Goderich area. "In 1860, 'Frank Harrington' settled in the Queen's Bush, where he began farming on 100 acres of land. For forty years he kept a diary, making one entry annually on Christmas Day. It is from this document that his story emerges, rich with the events of pioneer life, its joys and excitements, its hardships and tragedies." The editor has attempted to track down the original source of the diary which was printed previously in a newspaper and society journal, but without success and its authenticity remains in question. Description:
Toronto: Dundurn, 1993. 112 pp, oblong (8 1/2" H x 11" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "From the early 1890s through the 1920s, Toronto was caught up in a dizzying transportation revolution. As horse gave way to machine, the look of Toronto and the lifestyles of its inhabitants were altered irrevocably. First there was the electric streetcar, then the automobile, and soon all manner of 'working' vehicles. Street railway tracks were laid, service outlets and dealerships sprang up across the city, and the 'auto show' was born, an exciting new feature at the Canadian National Exhibition. (This) is a largely pictorial history of the city as it geared up for the 20th century, featuring vivid photos from the City of Toronto Archives, many previously unpublished, as well as newspaper ads from the era. Images of fire engines, garbage trucks, automobiles, early aircraft, harbour tugs, and streetcars bring the reader back to a time when all this meant extraordinary change.… Read More

Toronto: Ryerson Press, 1971. 199 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 5/8" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "By 1898 all roads led to the Klondike. One such road was to pass through the tiny Edmonton community, and Edmonton was never to be the same again. As the gateway and principal outfitting centre to one of the most popular - albeit treacherous - overland trails to the Yukon gold fields, Edmonton, then only 1500 strong, found itself playing host to over 2000 rough and hearty Klondikers. Within two years the town population doubled, local merchants prospered, business boomed. They were colourful times, not to be missed, and James Blower recounts them fondly. He salutes those boisterous, hopeful men equipped with pack horses, ox teams or dog sleds, embarking on a wild journey of more than 1600 miles through forests, swamps, perilous rivers and lakes. Parties of men never heard from again - did they strike it rich in the gold fields or were they victims… Read More

Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 2015. [184] pp, square (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "In the fall of 1965, Lewis Parker received a call from Maclean's magazine offering what was, for him, an unusual gig: accompanying a reporter to Peterborough to cover the Toronto Maple Leafs' preseason training camp, which included the stars of the day: Johnny Bower, George Armstrong, Terry Sawchuk, Tim Horton, Frank Mahovlich, Marcel Pronovost, Bob Baun, Eddie Shack, Dave Keon, Ron Ellis, and Pete Stemkowski. Lewis would spend some time with the team and shoot stills that would run alongside the magazine piece. He owned a Graflex camera, the standard equipment used by the newshounds of the era, and was an excellent photographer, but until then he had never shot for publication. Though it was a career departure, he agreed, and the results of his time spent with the team during training camp are within these pages: beautiful, visually arresting… Read More

Toronto: Firefly, 2003. 304 pp, square (10 7/8" H x 10 7/8" D). Profusely illustrated with colour photographs, 2 maps. "(O)utlines the signature architectural styles that left their mark on Toronto's ordered streets and discusses how they contributed to the unique neighbourhoods that developed across the city. Starting with Henry Scadding's simple log house built in 1794 near the Don River, the book moves through more than twenty signature styles: sophisticated Georgian, simple Regency, Gothic, Victorian, Greek Revival, Dutch Colonial and many more, ending with Lawren Harris's sleek art deco house in Forest HIll. With 250 houses and more than 350 colour pictures, 'Old Toronto Houses' focuses on ten outstanding Toronto neighbourhoods.
