Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1931. 316 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), orange cloth with black title/author blocks, orange lettering. Harry Beckhoff dust jacket and endpaper art. "The mangement of fiancees and the manipulation of high finances go roisterously hand in hand in this amorous and economic history of Biscuit, otherwise Lord Biskerton, son and heir of the sixth Earl of Hoddesdon. Biscuit had red hair, a preliminary scenario for a mustache, and a noble determination to escape the disgrace of work. Berry Conway who has less iron in his soul had succumbed to economic pressure and become the secretary to T. Paterson Frisby, a dyspeptic American who had twenty million and loved every cent of it. When Biscuit and Berry pooled ideas for the mutual betterment of their separate estates, and one idea had to do with Ann Moon, Frisby's beautiful niece and heir, they leaned heavily on Aunt Vera an old campaigner in the field of love. How Uncle Paterson was caught short and rushed to… Read More

(New York): Delacorte, 1973. 303 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w drawings. "Kurt Vonnegut bids farewell and Godspeed to all of the literary characters who have worked so hard for him over the years. Their unconditional liberty is the author's fiftieth birthday present to himself. Only Kilgore Trout, the science-fiction writer, is told of his new freedom from the whims of the author, He is promised a Nobel Prize as compensation for the pointlessness and bitterness of his life so far. For the others, Eliot Rosewater and all the rest, the author's birthday will seem a day like any other. This book answers once and for all the question, 'To what extent are human beings sacred, and to what extent are they machines?' " Light lean to the spine, light toning to the pages, light wear at the corners of the boards - with a small bump at the top corner of the rear board, light wrinkling and wear at the top/bottom of the spine. Description:
London: Michael Joseph, 1957. 188 pp, 8vo (8" H). In this latest installment of the 'Doctor' series, "Gordon soon discovers that a busy practitioner needs a wife as much as a stethoscope. As his other friend, Tony Benskin, observes, 'The patients don't like you messing about with their wives unless they know you've got one of your own at home'. And of course there has to be someone to answer the telephone, open the door, keep the N.H.S. records, cook the dinner, do the laundry - and protect him from some of his female patients. Dr Gordon's only worry is that the right girl will turn up. She does, but only after an unfortunate love affair which should illustrate to patients the dangers of failling for the same nurse as their doctor. He proposes, is accepted, and soon comes to the conclusion that a couple who can survive the preparations for their wedding can overcome pretty well everything in their married life to come. Despite relatives and real estate,… Read More

London: Elek, 1962. 138 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). B&w illustrations. By the author of "Cats in the Belfry" and "Cats in May". "(There) were nettles in the orchard. To keep them down, the Toveys bought a baby donkey. Annabel was tiny, shaggy, and enchanting, with a bouffant fringe and a most femininely determined disposition. To begin with, she was determined to go back to Mum, on the sands at Weston. Her statement of this intention kept the entire neighbourhood awake for a week. She soon, however, decided that she was going to stay after all, and began eating everything she could see - except, of course, the nettles. The activities of Annabel and her attendant satellites - Solomon (the Siamese cat, who liked her and insisted on sleeping in her bed) and Sheba (his mate, who pretended she Wasn't There), Miss Wellington (who said poor-dear-she-must-be-lonely), Henry the jennet (who was accordingly imported as a companion for her) and many others - all of these could fill… Read More

Description:
Toronto: Longmans, Green, 1940. 284 pp, + (4 pp), small 8vo (7 3/8" H), orange cloth with black lettering on spine. "In the heart of London's clubland there stands a tall and grimly forbidding edifice known to taxi-drivers and the elegant young men who frequent its precincts as the Drones Club. Yet its somewhat austere exterior belies the atmosphere of cheerful optimism and bonhomie that prevails within. For here it is that young gallants of Mayfair forgather for the pre-luncheon bracer and to touch lightly on the topics of the day. But all is not idle chatter that passes at this hour of the morning snifter - life in its sterner aspects often comes under review and is discussed with a candour that loosens tongues and encourages confidences. Then it is that the Eggs and Beans cluster round, and, with bated breath, listen while a Crumpet holds the floor with a dramatic narrative of domestic disturbances in the life of Bingo Little or, perhaps, the heart-throb story of Freddie… Read More

Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1932. 312 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). Orange cloth with black lettering on spine/front board. "Reviewing Mrs. J. She had a small husband and a large income, and both of these she used relentlessly in her efforts to attain her great ambition - to place her unfortunate husband on an ambassadorial throne. The success of her plans rested upon the shoulders of Senator Opal and the Vicomte de Blissac, but such is the way of Fate that the Senator's daughter Jane, Packy Franklyn, Blair Eggleston and Soup Slattery and Oily Carlisle were all in a measure responsible for the sudden turn of events.
