Description:
Melbourne: Gold Star, 1972. 143 pp, 8 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "Alan Marshall is called 'Gurawilla' or 'Song maker' by the natives of Arnhem Land. He and Sreten Bozic have studied the few remaining nomadic aboriginal tribes in Australia and have come to love and admire their culture. This book is the result of their knowledge of, and respect for, a race which had and still has vastly different - and perhaps superior - ideals from those of the white invaders who commandeered their lives and land. For, until the advent of the white man, the Aboriginals lived in complete accord with nature. Australian tribal society was uniquely a-materialistic and egalitarian, and was characterized by a rich ceremonial culture and religious life. It emphasised mystical communion with the environment rather than individual achievement and the glorification of human prowess. Human life was always considered to be part of the natural cycle and the happiness… Read More

New York: Broadway Books, 2001. 239 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. "In the spring of 1999, armed with little more than a descriptiion from a book and a map labeled 'all elevations unknown', Sam Lightner and his German rock-climbing buddy, Volker, found themselves deep in the jungles of Borneo on a mission to climb a mountain that was only rumored to exist. They had only their climbing expertise to rely on and a copy of a little-known book titled 'World Within', written by Major Tom Harrisson, a British World War II soldier who had been one of the first white men ever to explore the interior jungles of the island and interact with its native peoples. He had also constructed one of the most daring and unusual campaigns in military history: In 1945, he had been assigned the near-impossible mission of parachuting blindly into the thick Borneo rain forests to unite the feuding native tribes - who then had a grisly habit of cutting off heads - against the Japanese in… Read More

New York: Oxford University Press, 1956. 316 pp, 9" H. Map endpapers, drawings in black on blue stock by James Houston. Signed on title page "R. de Coccola". There is a non-authorial inscription on the half title page from one couple to another, stating "Father De C. is a good friend of ours, we hope you enjoy his story". "This is (the story of 'The People Beyond'), occasionally poignant, often shocking, but always heroic, from the opening scene of birth in an isolated iglu lit only by a flickering blubber lamp to the final disaster wrought by an epidemic that rages through a whole encampment. Raymond de Coccola was a missionary among these people for twelve years. In surroundings that could not have been more different from his native Corsica, he resolved to learn to understand the people by entering fully into their lives. He shared their quarters in iglu and tent, travelled with them on land and sea in the long winter and short summer, and took his full… Read More

Toronto: Natural Heritage / Dundurn, 2008. 310 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(A) treasure trove of stories - 'glorious and not-so-glorious' - embodying the history of the city of Belleville (Ontario) and its beautiful surroundings. Gerry Boyce, the dean of the area's historians, has done a masterful job of pulling together the best of Belleville's storied past, episode by episode, decade by decade: here one learns about the Native roots of the place, its debatable 'discovery' by Champlain, its hot-headed pre-Confederation politics, its involvement in Spiritualism in the 1850s and the spread of prostitution in the Victorian 1870s. Moving forward from the days of Susanna Moodie and Mackenzie Bowell, it provides an entertaining and probing stroll through the past 110 years, reminding readers of such national events as the sensational 1959 victory by the Belleville MacFarlands over the Russians at the World Amateur… Read More

N.P.: Self-published, 2005. 112 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H), simulated dark brown leather covers with gold lettering on spine and front cover. Inscribed by the author on front free endpaper. This is a bound thesis, printed on one side of each leaf. "This thesis presents original, holistic Aboriginal socialization as the foundation of literacy for the Aboriginal population. A definition representing the worldview and reality of Aboriginal society is offered to specifically meet the literacy needs of the Aboriginal community. Intergenerational trauma presented as the origin of several levels of underlying needs in the Aboriginal community clarifies the call for literacy training that will guide the individual to read their history and 'read situations, social structures and social locations' to enable better access to mainstream institutions and to build success and identity. Literacy is discussed in the context of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and University program, under which… Read More

Description:
Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1990. 176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors,… Read More

London: Frontline, 2012. 310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, photographs, reproductions. "(T)ells the harrowing story of the Eighth Frontier War against the Xhosa people of the Eastern Cape, often from the viewpoint of those actually doing the fighting. This desperate struggle for land invoked an increasingly brutal style of warfare. The Xhosa had previously fought with some chivalry, refusing to make war on women and children, just as they had in their own internecine wars. The Eighth War changed all that and vicious killings were perpetrated by both sides. The 'Harry Smith' of the title is the famous 19th century British soldier, Sir Henry George Wakelyn Smith, who served at the Cape of Good Hope on two occasions. The first was in the years 1828-1835, during which he was second-in-command to Sir Benjamin D'Urban. This ended with Smith departing the Cape under a cloud after his involvement in the murder of the Xhosa paramount chief Hintsa. His second period of service, between 1847… Read More

"The 155 prints reproduced in this widely acclaimed catalogue, 12 of them in full colour, constitute a retrospective survey of the first twenty years of Inuit printmaking in the Canadian Arctic. Selected for exhibition internationally, the prints provide exciting insights into the traditions and beliefs of a unique group of artists. Five widely scattered communities are represented - Cape Dorset (where James Houston introduced the Inuit to this form of expression in 1957 and guided their first experiments), Holman, Baker Lake, Pangnirtung, and Povungnituk and other centres in Arctic Quebec. Each community's printmaking history, artists and stylistic techniques are comprehensively documented. Don Mills: Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 1980. 64 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Taciturn, eccentric, wearing the suit and hat of a European and the moccasins and talismans of an Indian, Jerry Potts was an unlikely member of the North West Mounted Police. Nevertheless, he was to serve the Mounties loyally as a scout, guide and interpreter for more than twenty years. His unequalled knowledge of the prairies and their people would prove vital in the campaign to rid the West of whiskey smugglers, and in important treaty negotiations between the government and the native people. Potts lived at the frontier of settlement in the latter half of the nineteenth century, but he was a frontiersman in more ways than one. As a Metis and a Mountie he lived at the interface of three cultures, and during his lifetime the Wild West was tamed and modern Canada was born. His biography provides a uniquely personal perspective on a critical period in Canadian history." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership… Read More

Description:
Toronto: Altona / Natural Heritage, 1992. 48 pp, 11" H. "An epic retelling in poetic form of the creation myth of the Mississaugas. The author of the poem, W. Gordon Mills, was a businessman with the T. Eaton Company in Toronto in 1923 when he wrote the poem. He was later to serve as Deputy Minister of National Defence for Naval Services in the Second World War. In recognition of his wartime work he was named a Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG). The poem is illustrated by eleven paintings, specially commissioned for this publication. The paintings are the work of Saul Mamakeesick, a young Cree/Ojibway artist from Sandy Lake in Northern Ontario. Mamakeesick's art shows the influence of the Woodland School of Native Art which first began to depict Anishinabeg legendary heroes in its art in the early 1970s." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Soft Cover. Near Fine. Illus. by Saul Mamakeesick..
