Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author, a detailed chromolithographic title page, and 54 gorgeous chromolithographs of birds and their nests with eggs, all protected with a tissue guard. Illustrated with 37 chromo-lithographed sheets, printed on both sides totaling 74 color pages, along with mostly black-and-white ads and an index. A series of beautiful chromolithographs that chronicle both sides of the main thoroughfare of Broadway from Steamship Row and Bowling Green to 59th Street. A scarce and important block-by-block record of what Broadway looked like at the turn of the 20th century.

Rubbing with some splitting to the leather along the spine edge of the front cover of the first volume but covers firm. Some loss of cloth to the second volume. Very Good with clean, bright plates. Theodore Jasper. Two folio (11-3/4" x 15") volumes bound in publisher's half morocco leather with matching morocco corners. The first volume illustrated with 119 lovely chromolithographs drawn and colored from nature by Theodore Jasper; the second volume with 37 tinted lithographs. One of the best, as well as one of the last, great color-illustrated ornithologies. Later editions, especially the 1903 edition, have noticeably inferior quality plates.

Rochester, NY: James Vick Seedsman, 1890 & [1891]. First Edition. Hardcover. Slight fraying of outer edges of three plates in the second volume, which lacks its title page. Bright, clean copies inside and out. Fine. Two octavo (5-1/4" x 8-1/4") volumes bound in dark green publisher's blindstamped cloth. Illustrated with 22 bright chromolithographs of flowers. The 1891 volume ends with the October issue and contains the final chromolithograph of the series. The October 1891 issue announced that beginning with the next issue Vick's Magazine would be enlarged to three columns a page and its price reduced to fifty cents a year. Henceforth, it would be published by the Vick Publishing Company, with the seed business to be conducted by James Vick's Sons. The new magazine would not be as "pretentious" as CENTURY, HARPER'S or SCRIBNER'S, "but in proportion to the price will contain fully as much matter."
