Oxford: Theater, 1674. First English Edition. Hardcover. Occasional foxing or stain; short closed tear to one leaf with no loss. Leather cracked, dry, and peeling, but sound. Very Good. Small folio (7-1/4" x 11") in worn contemporary calf leather with a modern leather spine; vi, 147, [1] pages. First edition in English of a study of the geography, natural history, and inhabitants of Lapland, originally published in Latin the previous year. Cox I, 178; Wing S851. Illustrated with an engraved title page, a folding map, and 26 large woodcut text engravings, including the FIRST DEPICTION IN AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE BOOK OF A PERSON SKIING. Both covers bear the arms of Henry Yelverton (1664-1704), 15th Baron Grey de Ruthyn and Viscount de Longueville. Lapland is the least densely populated area of Finland. The Sami people, traditionally known in English as Lapps or Laplanders, are the northernmost indigenous people of Europe and are widely credited with being the inventors of the ski.
