Brunnow was a German astronomer who served as the director of the Detroit Observatory from 1854 to 1863, where he introduced advanced European astronomical concepts to the US. He translated his Lehrbuch der sphärischen Astronomie into English upon his return to Germany. This is Brünnow's major work, which went through five editions in German and was widely translated. First English-language edition. A very good copy with some foxing and spotting to the pages. Both hinges are reinforced with binding tape. Spine somewhat faded, with light fraying to the publisher's cloth at the top and bottom of the spine.
