Log marks were to Michigan what cattle brands are to the grazing states. Lumbermen identified ownership of logs by hacking or stamping symbols on them. In 1859 a law was enacted to require owners of logs floated in the Muskegon river, or its tributaries, to mark the ends of their logs (rather than the sides) in a distinctive manner and to register the marks in the local county.
