This is a copy of the Teacher's Guide for the reading readiness program of Scott Foresman's "Curriculum Foundation Series," which provided the Dick and Jane stories to thousands of American elementary school children for nearly 40 years from kindergarten through third grade. The guide includes lesson plans for the first three books ("We Look and See," "We Work and Play," and "We Come and Go," in the series as well as the texts of each of the books complete with all illustrations. Originally co-authored by William S. Gray and William H. Elson and issued by Scott Foresman in the 1930s, this teacher's guide is for the Basic Readers series first issued in 1941, which brought Dick and Jane, Sally and Spot to about 80 percent of Amereica's school children until almost 1980. In the first half of the 20th century, Garis, a former newspaper reporter, writing for the Stratemeyer Syndicate, produced literally hundreds of juvenile fiction novels under pen names such as Margaret Penrose and Laura Lee Hope as well as her own name. She also wrote several of the books early in the Bobsey Twins and Dorothy Dale series. Series under her name include The Let's Make Believe, and the Girl Scouts series. "Gloria at Boarding School" is one of two books featuring dark-haired Gloria Doane. This copy is a first edition and an early printing though probably not the first, based on comparing the copyright date with copyright dates in the ads in the back of the book. Andrew Young (1802 - 1877) was something of a 19th-century, western NY prodigy, largely self-taught and a teacher himself by age 13. Young's teaching career ended at 21 when he became a merchant, then shortly later, an editor and publisher of local newspapers in Warsaw and Batavia, NY, before editing an abolitionist paper in Warsaw. In 1835, he self-published his first book, "Science of Government," which was widely read in New York and neighboring states. Several different ways were tried in various parts of the country starting in the 1820s and employing both sight (recognizing whole words instead of letters) and sound (phonics) as well as revised and even new alphabets.
