if you deem it desirable..."-- CAROLINE CHESEBRO. Caroline Chesebro [Chesebrough] (1825-1873), born in Canandaigua, New York, was a children's novelist, short-story writer and teacher. Her first book, 'DreamLand by Daylight' was published in 1852; her fourteenth and final work was 'The Foe in the Household,' published in 1871 [Blain, 'Feminist Companion to Literature in English,' p. 201].
The letter, concerning a submission of a short story for children to the New York Observer, begins, "Enclosed I send a sketch for your Juvenile Department... [the "enclosed sketch" is not present with this letter]. Please let me know what it may be worth to you. I should be glad now and then to furnish a short story for children if you deem it desirable. Yours [signed] Caroline Chesbro." Addressed on verso, in Caroline Chesebro's ink holograph: "Mr. Prince [?]/ Ed. N.Y. Observer."
