1919 Houghton Mifflin Co. 1st US edition custom red leather hardcover. Bookbinder block stamp on the title page. Raised bands, gilt title, and previous owner's name in gilt on the spine. Heavy decorative end papers, pocket behind the back board houses 3 foldout maps. Previous owner's book plate on the front paste down, Arcadi Gluckman. Gluckman was a Colonel in the U.S. Army, a veteran of WWI & WWII. In WWI he commanded "E" Co. 39th Inf. 4th Division & was a staff in the China India Burma Theater of WWII where it is likely this was bound. During his military service he acquired a considerable number of decorations & awards including the Silver Star. During peacetime he was a prolific writer on the topic of guns & gun making.Top corner rubbing on the boards & some edgewear, else the leather is in excellent condition. Gold gilt on top edge of text block shows some light rubbing wear but still retains most of its' shine. Pages clean, unmarked & bright. Binding firm & straight.

Black cloth overboards with red cross & text to front cover, heavy fading on the front board & spine, one of the illustration pages is missing a corner & former owner's bookplate behind the front board, else very good throughout.British organizations, individuals & groups of friends gave lavishly of funds, stores & the services of trained nurses to the French, Belgian & Serbian Allies &, by 17 August 1914, Millicent had installed an ambulance with 8 trained nurses & a surgeon, Mr. Oswald Morgan of Guys' Hospital, in Namur.
This became the No9 Red Cross Hospital(Millicient Duchess of Sutherland's Ambulance) & it was established in the Convent of Les Soeurs de Notre Dame. On 22 August 1914 German forces attacked Namur & the hospital was inundated with wounded soldiers. In her book 'Six Weeks at the War' which is in fact a diary, she gives a graphic account of her experiences on that day. - The Western Front Association
