The survivors resorted to consuming human flesh to stay alive. Virginia's father was banished from the wagon train after killing a teamster in the Wattach Mountains during a dispute. Virginia wrote an extensive account of the trip which was published in Century Magazine. Virginia died February 14, 1921 in Los Angeles County, California. Jaffrey, NH: David R. Godine, Publisher, 2003. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 9x6x1. No Stock Photos! We photograph every item. slight edge wear to boards and jacket; In 1912, a young naturalist named Robert Cushman Murphy was offered the opportunity of a lifetime - to spend a year on one of the last Yankee whaleships out of New Bedford, on a voyage to the Antarctic. During the voyage, Murphy not only collected specimens and took photographs, developing them in seawater, but kept a journal that was later published and became a bestseller. Now, Eleanor Mathews, his granddaughter, has now taken Murphy's diary and supplementing it with his own original photographs, to present this fascinating story for modern readers. As a portrait of seafaring life, of the whaling industry still under sail, and an account of a natural history expedition, it is a unique window into a vanished time.

Charleston, SC: Arcadia Publishing, 2004. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 9x6x0. No Stock Photos! We photograph every item. light edge wear; Ambler, a working-class town located fifteen miles north of Philadelphia, boasts some of the grandest homes in Montgomery County. Ambler's evolution is rooted in the mills that sprang up along the Wissahickon Creek in the 1680s. The town entered the industrial age when the North Penn Railway pushed through in the 1850s. In 1856, a catastrophic head-on train collision killing fifty-nine created the heroine Mary Ambler, whose generous ministrations to the wounded caused the railroad in 1869 to rename its Wissahickon Station in her honor. But it was Philadelphia manufacturers Henry G. Keasbey and Richard V. Mattison who changed Ambler's character forever. When they relocated their business to Ambler in 1881, it became the asbestos capital of the world .

We photograph every item. edge wear, covers creased and soiled; The European discovery of America was not an accident which occurred outside of the main current of human affairs. It was the logical result of a series of happenings which began centuries before. The leading Continental powers that participated in the exploration and occupation of the New World were England, France, Holland, Spain, and Portugal. England was to prove the most successful. Their activities were complicated and shaped by the fact that the "New World" was itself an old world, home to somewhere between 50 and 100 million people with greatly varying traditions, languages, and economies. For them, this unsought-contact would transform their familiar lands into a truly new world.
