Unknown provenance, but we do know the author was very active during WWII, including writing letters, offering humor and encouragement, and sympathy, to enlisted men. We also know from many examples of her signature that she used a more formal, controlled hand -- including the capital E's in both words of her name -- for certain things, such as signing copies of Gone With The Wind, and a less formal, more free-form signature for other things, such as personal letters. We have seem numerous examples of both from various MM archives. We have been unable to determine the identity of the recipient. Vinita, Indian Territory: Chieftain Print Book. Good. Soft cover. 8vo. 8pp pamphlet, BAPTISM - THE MODE, by Rev. John Edwards, Vinita, Indian Territory: Chieftain Print, no date, circa 1890, paper toned, paper is brittle, damp-stain noted at upper spine corner. This is a very scarce Cherokee language imprint from Vinita, Indian Territory, which was later Oklahoma. The Reverend Chamberlin went to Pheasant Hill mission, in what is now Craig County, Oklahoma, in 1868, several years before Vinita came into existence. He printed his own translations of religious matter and distributed them among the Native Americans as part of his missionary work for the Presbyterian Church. The Chieftain Newspaper began around 1882. See Hargrett's Oklahoma Imprints #704. Very Scarce.

This is the first appearance in English of parts of the author's first novel, a few pages excerpted from the book of the same title that would be published by D. Appleton, NY, 1869, after having been published multiple times in France beginning in 1863. Verne, who was relatively unknown in the English - speaking literary world, was misidentified by the editors of the present piece as "M. Jules Berne." M. S. Saxonia, from which the author posted her first letter home, June 29, 1957. The final letter was dated August 20, 1957, from on board the S. In this earlier version, the man survives but with frostbite and a better understanding of the impersonal, unsympathetic attitude of the natural world toward mankind. The later version is widely known as among the author's most technically masterful and popular stories. A very scarce, important item in the London canon.
