From the introduction, "When Ernest Hemingway died in 1961 several unpublished manuscripts of consequence were left in his estate. These included two novels, a few short stories and one extraordinary work of nonfiction, African Journal, excerpts of which begin on the following pages and will continue in two successive issues of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. The author's account of the 1959 bullfight season which included a head to head, or mano a mano, between brothers-in-law Antonio Ordonez and Luis Miguel Dominguin, who had come out of retirement, and who were both personal friends of the author. Scribner's would not publish the book until 1985. The first issue, at page 2, includes a short piece from the editor called Two Prideful Rivals and a Prideful Life, and the third issue reprints a cable from the Hemingway one year later, at page 96, that brings the careers of the two matadors up-to-date.
