This is a first edition of the two-volume edition of the biography of Abraham Lincoln, written by the American poet, journalist and biographer Carl Sandburg (1878-1967). Sandburg wrote the biography in two sections:Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Year (1926), and Abraham Lincoln: The War Years (1939). In 1940, he won the Pulitzer for the completed biography. In 1954, his publisher issued the two books in one volume. This is one of those books.

It is in superb condition.
762 pages with lots of photos.
There is a doodle on page 762. One dogear at page 17.
Almost no shelfwear.
There are some fingerprints on the cover and there is a little loosening to the cover at the back.
Other than that, it's perfect.

This is a pristine first edition of The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream, the second book written by Barack Obama. In it, Obama expounds on many of the subjects that became part of his 2008 campaign for the US presidency. It was a massive best-seller.

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was an American polymath and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Franklin was a leading writer, printer, political philosopher, politician, Freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat.
His autobiography is considered a masterpiece, and a key element in the understanding of American history.
This copy was first published in 1941 by Walter J Black, and then again for the Classics Club in 1969.
It is beige tweed boards with red and gold on the cover and spine. The tops of the pages are dyed red.
It has not been read, or even opened.
However, there is a 2" white smear on the spine. It may come off; 'not sure.
That is its only flaw. It is otherwise pristine.

This is a first American edition of Churchill: Young Man in a Hurry 1874-1915, by the American biographer and historian Ted Morgan. Chronicling Churchill's life from his boyhood through his dismissal as First Lord of the Admiralty after the disastrous Dardanelles expedition. An interesting read showing elements of the greatness that would highlight the rest of his life.
624 pages with photos. Unclipped dust jacket with shelfwear. The book is in excellent condition, although the pages have darkened.

Between 1864 and 1979, the great British author Anthony Trollope wrote 6 books called The Palliser Novels. They revolve around the wealthy aristocrat and politician Plantagenet Palliser and his wife, Lady Glencora, and they cover the sweep of Victorian society. They are considered satire and parody of English life, and criticism of the British government's predilection for attracting corrupt and corruptible people to power.
In 1977, Oxford University Press released The Palliser Novels in separate 5" x 7 1/2" volumes. I have the full set: Can You Forgive Her?, Phineas Finn, Phineas Redux, The Duke's Children, The Prime Minister and The Eustace Diamonds. Empire is the fourth historical novel in the Narratives of Empire series by the American writer Gore Vidal (1925-2012).
It was published in 1987; this is a stated first edition and it is in pristine condition.
The novel concerns the fictional newspaper dynasty of half-siblings Caroline and Blaise Sanford. Playing these characters against real-life figures of the years 1898 to 1907, the novel portrays the conjunction of government and mass media in the creation of modern-day America. It offers an insight into the journalism of the time, following the exploits of William Randolph Hearst in his efforts to displace Theodore Roosevelt as president in 1904. It includes portraits of such leading public figures of the day as Roosevelt, Hearst, Henry Brooks Adams, Henry James, Secretary of State John Hay and President William McKinley.
It is navy blue boards with the author's name on the cover, in gold, and gold lettering on the spine. There are no marks of any kind in it or on it.

Nevil Shute Norway (1899-1960) was a brilliant English-Australian novelist, pilot and aeronautical engineer. He wrote 24 novels, many of which have been made into famous films, with On the Beach and A Town Like Alice being among the most famous; his novel The Pied Piper continues to be required reading in schools all over the world.
The Far Country is the story of an English woman who travels to Australia and falls in love with the country. But it is also quite political--a commentary on looking after one's citizens (the National Health Service was new) and the treatment of immigrants in Australia.
It has been filmed twice, for television.

It is about a Jewish man, going through a mid-life crisis, who must make drastic changes in order to take the job of U.S. Secretary of State.
407 pages. No dust jacket. The original owner signed the front endpaper. Minor rubbing to the gold lettering on the spine. Otherwise perfect condition.

This is a stated first edition (1966) of The Grass Crown, the second historical novel in the epic Masters of Rome series by the great Australian writer Colleen McCullough (1937-2015).
