Description:
Zoe Company, 1996. Assumed First Paperback Edition Printing Unknown. Soft cover. New/No Jacket Issued. Laura Fiedler-Ates color & B&W illustrations. CONDITION: UNREAD 1996 Zoe Company paperback (stapled wraps), probably first paperback edition, no printing given. Edited by Sand Warren Marmillion and illustrated by Laura Fiedler-Ates. B&W interior illustrations - with borders. CONTENT: It appears that this was compiled and edited for the visitor's center at Laura Plantation in Louisiana. This plantation was one where Alcee Fortier wrote or recorded the folk tales of the Trickster Compair Lapin as told by the descendants of slaves who were taken to the plantation from West Africa. The language of this story has been faithfully reprinted as Alcee Fortier originally wrote it. Spelling, grammar and punctuation reflect the speech patterns of the creole dialect as translated into English. Includes historical notes on the Plantation. I see this as a "scholarly" work rather than a work of fiction for children.…

Lawrence Hill, 2009. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. New/New. B&W era photos. CONDITION: UNREAD 2009 Lawrence Hill hardcover (black boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. B&W era photos and photo section. Tiny edge wear top DJ edge. CONTENT: Lynchings, beatings, arson, denial of rights, false imprisonment--the civil rights era brought attention to these heinous offenses that were the status quo for African Americans in many areas of the country. And no state was more notorious as a sanctuary for the murderers and perpetrators of hate crimes than Mississippi. In 1956 state lawmakers installed the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission to preserve segregation and "Mississippi Values" by declaring the state outside the jurisdiction of the federal government. Under the auspices of the governor and lieutenant governor, the commission joined forces with groups such as the White Citizens' Councils, which would stop at nothing in their quest for white supremacy. In Devil's…

Smithmark, 1994. First Thus 1st Printing. Hardcover. New/As New. B&W era photo section. NO PRIORITY PLEASE. CONDITION: UNREAD, but not quite perfect, 1994 Smithmark hardcover (teal boards) & dust jacket (in mylar cover), appears to be a facsimile edition, first printing. B&W era photo section. PROBLEM: 2 tiny "pin holes" dust jacket. IMHO, Longstreet (who often disagreed with Lee's tactics and decisions) is the most interesting of all the CSA generals. Love to hear your comments on this.

CONDITION: UNREAD, but not quite perfect, 2018 Viking hardcover (white boards) & dust jacket (in mylar cover - all white books need protection), first edition, first printing. PROBLEM: Small remainder dot bottom edges at spine. CONTENT: The New Orleans mayor who removed the Confederate statues confronts the racism that shapes us and argues for white America to reckon with its past. A passionate, personal, urgent book from the man who sparked a national debate. "There is a difference between remembrance of history and reverence for it." When Mitch Landrieu addressed the people of New Orleans in May 2017 about his decision to take down four Confederate monuments, including the statue of Robert E. Lee, he struck a nerve nationally, and his speech has now been heard or seen by millions across the country. In his first book, Mayor Landrieu discusses his personal journey on race as well as the path he took to making the decision to remove the…

Hill and Wang, 2013. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. New/New. B&W map of the "Riot" by Jeffrey Ward. CONDITION: NEW 2013 Hill & Wang hardcover (tan boards) & dust jacket, first edition, first printing. B&W map of the "riot" area. CONTENT: An unprecedented account of one of the bloodiest and most significant racial clashes in American history. In May 1866, just a year after the Civil War ended, Memphis erupted in a three-day spasm of racial violence that saw whites rampage through the city's black neighborhoods. By the time the fires consuming black churches and schools were put out, forty-six freed people had been murdered. Congress, furious at this and other evidence of white resistance in the conquered South, launched what is now called Radical Reconstruction, policies to ensure the freedom of the region's four million blacks?and one of the most remarkable experiments in American history. This is a portrait of a Southern city that opens an entirely new view onto the Civil War and its aftermath.…

Simon & Schuster, 2020. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/New. No illustrations. CONDITION: What makes this book "As New?" Small remainder mark top edges. UNREAD, but not quite perfect, 2020 Simon & Schuster hardcover (black boards) & dust jacket (in mylar cover), first edition, first printing. No illustrations. CONTENT: "For almost two decades, investigative journalist Jerry Mitchell doggedly pursued the Klansmen responsible for some of the most notorious murders of the civil rights movement. This book is his amazing story. Thanks to him, and to courageous prosecutors, witnesses, and FBI agents, justice finally prevailed." -John Grisham. On June 21, 1964, more than twenty Klansmen murdered three civil rights workers. The killings, in what would become known as the "Mississippi Burning" case, were among the most brazen acts of violence during the civil rights movement. And even though the killers' identities, including the sheriff's deputy, were an open secret, no one was charged with murder…

Alfred Knopf, 2003. 1st Edition Assumed 1st. Hardcover. New/As New. a few B&W photos throughout. CONDITION: UNREAD, but not quite perfect, 2003 Knopf hardcover (white boards) and dust jacket (in mylar cover), first edition, assumed first printing. PROBLEM: very light edge wear to dust jacket edges. CONTENT: Sons of Mississippi recounts the story of seven white Mississippi lawmen depicted in a horrifically telling 1962 Life magazine photograph-and of the racial intolerance that is their legacy. In that photograph, which appears on the front of this jacket, the lawmen (six sheriffs and a deputy sheriff) admire a billy club with obvious pleasure, preparing for the unrest they anticipate-and to which they clearly intend to contribute-in the wake of James Meredith's planned attempt to integrate the University of Mississippi. In finding the stories of these men, Paul Hendrickson gives us an extraordinarily revealing picture of racism in America at that moment. But his ultimate focus is on…
