He subsequently became Executive Assistant to Senator Truman and later as appointments secretary was a close and trusted aide to the President. His reputation was of a no-nonsense, poker-faced man who knew how to get things done. He was convicted in 1956 for accepting a bribe and eventually served six months in federal prison. Eventually after Lucky had grown to full size she was too big to live in the White House and was moved to the Reagan's ranch in California where she lived the rest of her life. This wonderful, family portrait photograph was the original camera-ready artwork from which greeting cards were printed and sent to various friends. Somerset Maugham, was published in London and New York in 1944. Maugham was seventy years old when the book was published, and it was to be the last of his major novels. Reagan gained national attention in his speeches for Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign and at the urging of California Republicans was considering a run for Governor later that year. 4to., in fine condition.

Washington, D.C., 1948. One page, on White House stationery dated May 13, 1948, to Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam, Bishop of the Methodist Church in New York City. A highly interesting letter about religion and politics. President Truman thanks Bishop Oxnam, an active leader of the Federal Council of Churches and Americans for Democratic Action. for sending him a copy of his recent speech to the Conference of Methodist Bishops in Boston. He writes in part: "There is a great need in these troublous days for the leadership of the church which you suggest. We must not only proclaim the Christian ideal. We must live it." In this highly interesting letter Hemingway refers to Gustav Regler who served in the German Infantry during the First World War and was seriously injured. He joined the Communist Partyand spent time in the USSR. He later served as political commissar of the II International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. In Spain he befriended Ernest Hemingway and was wounded at the Battle of Guadalajara. Hemingway mentions in this letter that he wrote the introduction to Regler's book "The Great Crusade."
