Washington: Unknown, 1832. In October of 1832 Andrew Jackson was running for re-election, and Henry Ashton was a member of Andrew Jackson's inner circle [Jackson appointed him to be the Marshal of the District]. Important to the campaign were the many "Hickory Clubs" formed to support Jackson. This pampphlet was "Adopted October 9, 1832, and Ordered to be Printed" and lays out charges against the opposition. This is a RARE item from one of the most important eras of the new American government. Softbound, with serw paper wraps; titling in black. Clean text; 23 pages. This is a Very Good copy, with a few issues. The front cover has a tear to the upper corner next to a stain. New York, Chicago, & San Francisco: Rand McNally & Company, 1930. Because of the stereotyped characters, Amos & Andy are controversial today. The radio show was extremely popular , running from 1928 into the 1960s. Although the book claims that Negroes enjoyed it as much as whites, the show was under protest almost from the start. The creators, who also performed the parts, were white, but when a transfer to television was made in 1951, the parts were played by African-American actors. At any rate, the show is an interesting and significant part of American cultural history. This is a Very Good copy of the Second Edition, issued a year later than the First. Bullard answers European critics of American involvement, which may be traceable to the Robert Lee Bullard (1861-1947) commanded the Big Red One in the War to End All Wars; here he discusses the "failure" to place American soldiers under European command. Cleveland: Cleveland Indians Baseball Company, 1956. This is a Near Fine copy of a booklet celebrating the career of the great Hall of Fame baseball pitcher, Bob Feller. Uncommon, particularly in collectable condition. Turquoise paper wraps with gilt lettering on the front cover. Clean text; with 30 pages of vintage photographs and stats. Boston: Roberts Brothers Helen Jackson (1830-1885) became one of the most prominent advocates for Native Americans. Her romantic novel about California natives, "Ramona," remained vastly popular for many decades. But this, Jackson's seminal work, was her most influential. First published in 1881; this is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing. Despite its popularity, the book is rather scarce today. New York: Lane & Scott, 1849. George Cubitt (1791-1850) was a Methodist Episcopal minister and historian. First published in 1848, conveniently in during the Mexican War, this popular history ran to at least ten editions during the 19th Century, but is uncommon now. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the Second Printing, with revisions by Daniel P. Kidder (1815-1891). Published "For the Sunday-School Union of the Methodist Episcopal Church."Marbled paper-covered boards with black leather tips and spine; titling and rules in gilt on the spine (along with the number "438" at the foot; possibly school library number). Clean text; frontis engraving of Cortes, 218 pages. Rubbed along the margins, covers probably faded, but remains nicely attractive. The text is quite bright and unfoxed. . Later Printing. Hard Cover. Philadelphia: Globe Bible Publishing Co., 1898. Highly decorative binding: blue cloth with crossed flags, a rising sun, and a ship (the Maine?) with an olive wreath added for effect, in red, silver, and gilt. The decorations on the spine feature a Cuban shield and n apparenbt explosion. Clean text; Cuba's fight ends at page 306; the war with Spain continues on to page 536. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition.Some fading and rubbing to the spine; gilt dulled, lightly bumped corners. A rather spectacular example of either American patriotism or jingoism.. Not really history, poet (and leader of "The Fugs" band) Ed Sanders produced an impressionistic view of the Manson "family;" its hallucinatory feel is well-suited for a dream gone very bad. Wyoming, PA: Cro Woods (Publishing), 1969. Here is an interesting sidebar to the history of the secret Irish labor organization, the "mollies." Mr. McCarthy contends that there was no such organization; it was a fiction perpetrated by Franklin B. Gowen of the Reading Railroad to destroy the attempts to organize labor in the coal fields; he claims to have new evidence, presented here. A fascinating, and an uncommon book; certainly much of the original testimony was tainted. This is a Fine copy of the First Edition.
