Description:
New York: Hurd and Houghton, 1871. Ludlow (1836-1870) was a prolific journalist; his most famous work is "The Hashesh Eater" (1857) describing his addiction to opium. Ironically, he has become an icon of the current American drug culture. This is his account of a trip across the American West with the artist Alfred Bierstadt in 1859. Of interest is a long Appendix detailing the life of the Mormons in Utah. Originally published in 1870; this is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the second issue, from a year later. An uncommon title. Green cloth binding, stamped in black on the front cover, with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; vi, 568 pages; illustrated. While basically a sound copy, it is rather rough-looking, with rubbing to the margins. The pages are stiff to turn, suggesting presence in a damp location at some time; there are flood marks on the first 15 pages or so. At some time, what looks to be a contemporary newspaper clipping was laid-in; residues of this are present. There is a…
