The first women to become president of a major educational institution, Wellesley College at age 26. In the early 1890's she became the first president of the new University of Chicago. Throughout her academic career she was a staunch advocate of higher education for women during the late 19th century. Palmer's life was commemorated at a service at Harvard University in 1903 attended by college presidents whom she knew and other notable individuals in higher education. Most of the letters are to and from New York City. Most of the letters are in French with some in English. Names and places mentioned are frequently identified in footnotes. This volume was printed in cooperation with the American Embassy at Madrid at the behest of his family. Many of the letters deal with political situations in France, and after the death of Therese Caylus (his daughter) his grand daughters wished to have them published for his posterity -- great grand children and their descendants.
