Overall, a strikingly well-preserved example of this rare poster commemorating the achievements of Joseph Charles Price. According to Blackpast.org, "Price, founder and first president of Livingston College, in North Carolina, was born free on February 10, 1854 in Elizabeth City, Price studied at St. Cyprian Episcopal School founded for the children of ex-slaves by Boston educators. He later attended Shaw University in Raleigh in 1873 but transferred to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1875. Price graduated as valedictorian in 1879 after winning several oratorical prizes. The Kentucky-born, Los Angeleno author's debut short story collection, including "The Price of Dirt," "The Way of Shadows," "In the Dark," "Waiting for Mongo," and "Roman Times," which won the Gwendolyn Brooks Literary Award in 1972. In his preface to the work, Jones explains that "most of the stories in this collection employ modern literary techniques as diverse as impressionism and surrealism, and especially important is the experimental synthesis of fantasy/realism. Myths and mythical notions, for example, are sometimes utilized in a campy fashion. Black field hand dialect might end up in the mouths of the most educated aristocrats. A breath-taking document of Andy Warhol's creative process at the Factory, circa 1977, including twenty photographs showing Warhol with his own Polaroid camera, shooting images of two unidentified men engaged in acts of an intimate nature for a series known as Sex Parts and Torsos. The other images show the artist mixing and applying pigments in the studio, and cutting red paper, two samples of which are included in the sequence. A fascinating work of graphic art produced by Architects and Planners Against the War, an organization with chapters in New York and the Bay Area that sought to organize professionals in architecture and city planning against U.S. involvement in Vietnam. The group has cited by architectural historian Brian D. Goldstein for its further engagement with the Black Power movement to decry so-called "urban renewal," the government-backed clearance and reconstruction of American cities in the postwar period. We cannot locate another example of the work.
