London:: J.J. Stockdale,, 1813. First Edition. An Anti-Catholic pamphlet, printed by J.J. Stockdale. An examination of the Claims of Roman Catholics, particularly those in Ireland, and concluding that "Too much is already conceded to the Papists." The initials W.L.J. appear in ink to the top of the title page. There are some annotations in ink throughout the text. These are in a contemporary hand, and appear to be proofing corrections - changing the grammar, correcting errors, and altering some footnotes. Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). A little rubbing but still in good condition. Marbled end papers. There is a prize inscription from Spitalfield School of Design from May 1843 to the end paper. On the second end paper is a large gift inscription giving the book to a young boy on his 12th birthday. The rest of the work is in good, clean condition, with a light darkening / foxing only. Attractive engraved frontis of a perspective view of Greenwich Hospital from across the Thames. One page toned but legible. Bound in publisher's dark green cloth covered boards with black edge decorations to front and rear boards. Gilt spine title. Chipping to head and toe of spine. The head has been crudely glued, and the bottom edge corners worn through. Slightly weak to the front hinge. Owner's bookplate (Francis de Neufville Schroeder - author of works on Interior Design). Buckfast, Devon: Buckfast Abbey, 1929. First Edition. First edition. A very nice copy of this Benedictine Quarterly Journal. Full of period Catholic adverts, articles, book reviews and poetry. Pale blue paper covers with silver decoration to the front cover. Frontis illustration of the Bishop of Plymouth (Bishop Barrett) Articles include a translation of the original document of "The Surrender of Buckfast Abbey". There is also a photograph of detail from the Buckfast choir stalls tipped in. To the rear is an attractive colour illustrated folding advert for a clerical outfitters in Exeter. A decent copy. The paper covers are a little faded to the edges. The yapped edges are slightly bruised. Internally clean and tidy throughout. 111-162., [xi] pp.

San Francisco: Alan Wofsy Fine Arts, 1991. Two volumes. Hardback in dust wrapper. The front of the wrapper of Volume 1 has been sliced in half (quite neatly!) now held in removable plastic. Apart from this flaw, the wrappers are clean and tidy. Books are bound in burgundy laminated cloth. The front of Volume 1 has a thin scratch (corresponding to the wrapper damage). Volume 1 - contains the World, Europe and Africa. 347 works are catalogued, with 44 plates and illustrations. Volume 2 - contains Asia, Oceania, Antarctica & America. Contains 381 works catalogued and 46 plates and illustrations. xiv, 1-300., xiv, 301-676. pp. 320 by 240 mm (12½ by 9½ inches).

It is not clear whether these are 32 original ink drawings in the style of Punch and Judy by one H. Abbot, or if they are engravings culled from other sources and here gathered together. Perhaps it is a combination of the two. There are 15 numbered illustrations, with a title to each. This is followed by a further 7 illustrations on diverse subjects. Then comes "Attitudes for Exits from the Stage" with 8 small illustrations with quotations(seemingly from Shakespeare). Finally are three further illustrations. Overall, we sell this as a nice gathering (and hence unique collection) of mid-Nineteenth century engravings. 70 by 120mm (2¾ by 4¾ inches). The small pocket book is clean and tidy, with a little rubbing to the edges. Overall a nice item. Slight darkening / foxing throughout.

London: Punch Offices, 1847. First editions. Each volume has ten hand coloured steel engravings, and numerous b/w wood engravings in the text - all by John Leech. Uniformly bound in brown cloth with gilt designs on the front panel. Gilt titling and designs on the spines. Cloth a little rubbed and starting to split at head of spine on Volume II. Original yellow endpapers with neat ex libris to the front of each. The plates are lovely and bright. A touch of foxing to the pages. Vol. I: xii, 320 pp; and Vol. II: xii, 304 pp. 230 x 150 mm (9 x 6 inches).

Excellent condition. A touch of handling to the edges only. Single sheet folded. Unpaginated - 4pp. 195 x 130 mm (7¾ x 5 inches).

London:: R. Ackermann's Repository, 1809. Very nice clean impression of this plate, with good colouring. The frame is sound, but with a little rubbing to the edges. Can be removed from the glazed frame and sent as a print in mount if desired.. Plate number 50 from Ackermann's "Microcosm of London". A lovely aquatint. The architectural details were drawn by Pugin, and Rowlandson drew the figures. (both are credited on the sheet). The aquatinting was done by J.C. Sadler. Glazed and framed in a black and gilt frame. Total size: 405 x 345 mm (16 x 13½ inches). Ackermann produced this work between 1807 and 1810. One of the greatest of the colour plate books. "The plates by Rowlandson and Pugin present an unrivalled picture of London in early 19th century, of historic value, as many of the buildings no longer exist" (Tooley).

He was the vicar of Eastington, Stonehouse in Gloucestershire, member of Kent Archaeological society. and author of "Caesar in Kent: an Account of the Landing of Julius Caesar and His Battles With the Ancient Briton" Published in 1888.
