Publishers Ltd., 1971. The rare first issue of Okike, a forum for African art, fiction and poetry founded and edited by Chinua Achebe. Achebe, noted Nigerian novelist, poet, educator and critic, began the magazine just after the Nigerian-Biafran War as a vehicle for new and established African writers; it was the longest surviving journal of literature on the African continent. This issue features three poems by Dennis Brutus, South African activist, educator, journalist and poet, as well as vignettes and drawings by Uche Okeke, noted illustrator, painter, sculptor and educator. Okeke co-founded the Zaria Art Society in 1958 and served as head of the Fine Arts Department at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka from 1971 to 1985.
