Description:
This cabinet card conveyed a strong political message on behalf of the South African political party Het Volk, probably in the run up to an important election in the Transvaal colony in 1907.
Het Volk had been founded by two Afrikaners, Louis Botha and Jan Smuts, as an exclusively white party in the Transvaal in 1904. One of the main planks of the party's platform was reconciliation between the Afrikaner people and the British, who had fought against each other in a brutal war—commonly known as the Boer War--between 1899 and 1902. The Afrikaners had fought for their independence from British rule, but the British ultimately won the war and incorporated Afrikaner territory into the British Empire. Although Botha and Smuts had played leading roles in the fight against the British, they subsequently decided that the best way forward was to establish a cooperative alliance between the Afrikaners and the British in order to maintain white minority rule over the vastly larger population of black South… Read More

Description:
A simple, yet well-done product shot. I wonder if it was one of a series? There is unfortunately nothing on the back exception 'Postcard' in four languages (English, French, Italian, and Spanish). The card is in good condition with some light edge wear and surface marks and silvering.

Description:
The woman at the top left in the scan of all of the images is identified as Alex Lo in pencil on the back. It is dated 1959. Each image measures about 2 x 2.25 and is in fine condition with light marks. I love the photos' sepia tone, expert lighting, and the painted backdrop. While I don't doubt these women knew each other, it seems they weren't taken the same day as some women are clearly in evening wear and others are dressed as if they were out shopping or strolling. Clearly though, they knew the best place to stop for a photo in their town.

Description:
Gilda Radner (1946-1989) was a member of Saturday Night Live's first cast. She quickly established herself as a comedic talent and created many memorable characters. Gilda gamely posed with the teens multiple times in 1976 in New York. SNL began in 1975 so these boys were definitely among the show's earliest die-hard fans. It's lovely to see how kindly she treated the kids, signing things for them, accepting their Christmas presents, doing interviews, and posing for all the photos. The photos of the boys wearing those fantastically hideous shirts were printed in June 1976. The snaps printed in December 1976 are pretty funny. She's speaking into a tape recorder, obviously just in from the cold in the basement of 30 Rock, snow still in her hair, but finding time for her fans. Another photo has her accepting a giant box of chocolates from one of the boys and giving him a very welcome peck on the cheek. On the box, he or his brother wrote, "To Gilda, (the perfect woman) We Love You Always and Forever… Read More
