Description:
Poolbeg, 2013 Book. New. Soft cover. 1st Edition. Built 5000 years ago on a hillside in the Boyne Valley, long before the pyramids in Egypt, Newgrange is a place of wonder and mystery. Who were the people who made this underground passage and chamber? How did they do it without machines? Was it a burial place or a temple to the gods? Do the symbols carved into the stone have a special meaning? Why was Newgrange lost for centuries? And above all how did those people so long ago know how to create the 'lightbox' and banish darkness on the shortest day of the year - the Winter Solstice? The myths, legends and history in The Story of Newgrange may give the reader some possible answers. There are many myths and legends about Newgrange, from brave warriors to mighty gods, The Story of Newgrange tells us of some of them..

Description:
Mercier Press, 2019 Book. New. Soft cover. The Royal Irish Constabulary are often portrayed as the villains of the War of Independence in Ireland, Irishmen who betrayed their country by serving the British regime. No memorial has been raised in Ireland to those who died during the conflict and their names are largely forgotten, apart from a few who gained notoriety through the fact that Michael Collins himself ordered their killing. As a result, while their deaths are recorded in histories of the time, little attention is paid to the men themselves. In Police Casualties in Ireland 1919 - 1922, Richard Abbott addresses this imbalance by recording in detail the deaths of over 500 police casualties during the war, not only from the RIC, but also the Dublin Metropolitan Police, the Auxiliaries, Black and Tans and Ulster Special Constabulary. His portrayals of these men remind us that behind the villainous caricatures were human beings, who left behind devastated families and friends, just as the victims… Read More

Description:
Brandon, 2005 Book. Very Good. Soft cover. A little wear to the card covers. Gerry Adams imagines an Ireland in which the 1916 Proclamation is seen as an historic document in the mould of the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence and the Freedom Charter. He outlines the challenge of transforming Irish society through a vision of self-determination and sovereignty, inclusiveness and equality. He looks to the protection of tradition and culture, the defence of rural communities; the special importance of children and women, and the need to liberate the individual while instilling a feeling of community and protecting the environment..

Description:
Irish Academic Press Ltd, 2022 Book. New. Hardcover. Spiritual Wounds challenges the widespread belief that the contentious events of the Irish Civil War (1922-23) were covered in a total blanket of silence. The book uncovers an archive of published testimonies by pro- and anti-treaty men and women, written in both English and Irish. Most of the testimonies discussed were produced in the 1920s and 1930s, and nearly all have been overlooked in historical study to date. Revolutionaries went to great lengths to testify to the 'spiritual wounds' of civil war: they adopted fictionalised disguises, located their writings in other places or periods of time, and found shelter behind pen names. This wealth of published testimony reveals that the silence of the Irish Civil War was not necessarily a result of revolutionaries' inability to speak, but rather reflects the unwillingness of official memory makers to listen to the stories of civil war veterans..

Description:
Cornell University Press, 2005 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The dust jacket is a little worn and creased. Conor Cruise O'Brien is recognized internationally for having lived a series of controversial public lives - scapegoated UN representative during the Belgian Congo crisis, champion of academic freedom at the University of Ghana, courageously independent political activist, gadfly among the New York intelligentsia of the 1960s, leading Irish nonfiction writer of the twentieth century. This sampler brings together for the first time classic pieces originally published on both sides of the Atlantic. The essays and two early poems included here address topics from the challenges of African politics to Yeats's relationship with fascism to fashionable varieties of Americocentrism..

Description:
Thames & Hudson, 2015 Book. New. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The new instalment in T&H's successful myths series (after The Greek and Roman Myths and The Egyptian Myths) introduces the world of the Celts, their gods and goddesses, heroes, monsters and villains. As well as vividly exploring the tales, the author brings her expertise in the archaeology of the Iron Age and particularly shamanism to bear on the mythical worlds she describes, with evidence as diverse as the Gundestrup Cauldron and the famous bog bodies. Starting with a discussion of how myths are transmitted and by whom, the author continues with an account of the Irish and Welsh myths and their key actors and motifs, before moving on to consider themes such as heroes, animals, women, environment and the Otherworld. In her finale, the author asks how the myths survived the Christianization of Europe and looks at the influence of monastic chroniclers on the tales, which they preserved and adapted..
