The Mining Magazine, 1927. Soft cover. Very Good. A signed offprint by the mining and petroleum expert Henry B Milner. The author has dedicated the pamphlet in the top corner of the front cover: 'A H Wells Esq BSc. With the Author's Compliments'. In this article Milner analyses the future of oil production in the light of current figures for oil production and demand. The text is complete; there is some discolouration to the printed wrappers. This forms part of a large collection of signed natural historial and geological pamphlets recently acquired by Modernfirsteditions. Very Good 1927

Dublin: Religious Tract and Book Society for Ireland, 1839. Hardcover. Near Fine. x pp96. A pocket edition of 'The Great Exemplar' by Irish poet and abolitionist Mary B Tuckey, who was a supporter of the Cork Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society. Nicely bound in publisher's green with pretty gilt decoration, all edges gilt, engraved frontispiece illustration complete with tissue guard. An attractive book which has been well cared for by its owners, the pages are crisp and clean, a few pencil marks to the end papers being the only blemish. A lovely little volume. Near Fine 1839

Canadian Pacific Railway, 1907. pp 36 A pamphlet published by the Canadian Pacific Railway encouraging "energetic and enterprising" Scots to emigrate to Canada. This description of the country is by a journalist from The Scotsman newspaper who was invited by the president of the railway company to make a tour and report on "the progress and resources of the Dominion". Illustrated with black and white photographs. Very good in coloured card wrappers, creased and nicked to the edges but bright and complete. Provenance: from the recent Glasgow dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Gray (1934-2019) is acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. Mediterranean, 1814. Napoleonic War manuscript ship's log for a British warship in the Mediterranean that would be used shortly afterwards to transport convicts to New South Wales (1819) and Van Diemen's Land (1821) in Australia. The folio-sized ship's log comprises two disbound sections of a notebook of a junior British naval officer's training logbook from 1814. Manuscript title to front cover: 'Log &c of the Proceedings of HMSS The Malabar. Kept by W B Boddy.' A beautifully worked half page watercolour sketch of The Malabar under full sail appears on the following leaf as frontispiece. Hand-stitched, laid foolscap paper (water mark John Hayes 1809, vertical chain lines), externally heavily marked, including signs of burning to spine and bottom left of front cover; internally fairly clean, though yellowed, and most pages ink-stained. London: John Churchill, 1846. Very Good. pp 582 First edition illustrated throughout with wood engravings of human anatomy. This example is in a nineteenth century half leather binding with gilt decoration over brown cloth, with marbled edges. The binding is sound but the leather is worn to the corners and the spine label lost. Internally the text and illustrations are complete. The two plates of cells and the nerve centres of different classes of animal are damp stained, but the other pages are clean. With an extended chapter on the development and metamorphoses of cells. London: J M Dent & Sons Ltd, 1910. Hardcover. Very Good. In very good condition in tan cloth, the edition is undated. Ownership inscription to half title page of James Herbert Wilson, Harold Wilson's father's copy, later inherited. This book comes from the private collection of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his wife Mary who died recently at the age of 102. During his lifetime Harold Wilson kept the book in the Ashley Gardens mansion flat in Westminster that the couple shared until his death in 1995. After she lost her husband Mary Wilson continued to live in the couple's flat, surrounded by a lifetime's accumulation of books and memories until 2016. Very Good 1910

London, Oxford and Cambridge: Rivingtons, 1879. Simon Bailey's copy - an Anglican priest who was among the earliest to develop AIDS and stay in parish ministry. Black roan, a large octavo binding, faded and rubbed to edges. Bailey's bookplate appears on the first black flyleaf: 'Simon Bailey Westcott Hl[ou]se Eastertide 1981.' A well-used copy, particularly around the printed order for Holy Communion with text corrected for use during the reign of George VI in the 1940s and some pages with loss from repeated turning during services. A few notes of plainchant inserted around the 'Proper Prefaces'. An excellent provenance for this work with a letter presenting the book from Simon Bailey's executor. First published in 1993, this edition has been expanded to include the climbs of the 1990's. Fine in photographic wrappers with several post it notes annotated by George Band. A laid in letter from the Alpine Club Library reminds Band about a book he left behind the previous day. From the collection of English mountaineer George Band, the youngest member of the successful team which conquered Mount Everest in 1953. Band was President of the Mountaineering Club at Queen's College, Cambridge and his exceptional Alpine record caught the eye of John Hunt, who put him in charge of radio equipment on the Everest expedition.
