Boards lightly worn along edges with chipping to edges of original spine. Binding is sound. Newspaper clippings rather shoddily mounted to front preliminaries with some associated staining. Boards are sturdy and square with matching nudge at head and a brief scratch to rear panel. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. Chunky biography of the OuLiPo group writer and filmmaker.

"Being Number One of the Independent Theatre Series" (upper cover). The author's first play to be staged, at the Royalty Theatre in 1892. The piece, collected in Shaw's aptly-titled 1898 collection "Plays Unpleasant," opens with an unapologetic Author's Preface in which Shaw informs the reader "It is not my fault...that my art is the expression of my sense of moral and intellectual perversity rather than of my sense of beauty," closing with the line "I am no novice in the current critical theories of dramatic art; and what I have done I have done on purpose" (pp. xviii-xix).

The idea was launched by Frank Buchman, head of the spiritual movement, Moral Re-Armament, originally called the Oxford Group, and today known as Initiatives of Change. Buchman's idea, according to the preface, was for Freedom to rouse the conscience of the world, as Uncle Tom's Cabin had done in the United States, to help bring freedom to all men.
