Description:
Daguerreotypes (4) & Tintype (1); Sixth-plates (4) & ninth-plate (1)
A collection of cased images (four daguerreotypes and one tintype) showing Euro-American subjects holding raised beadwork purses created by the Haudenosaunee (People of the Longhouse), also known as the Six Nations (Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk and Tuscarora Nations). Based on traditional patterns and fashioned by Haudenosaunee women using Venetian beads and metal sequins, these purses and other souvenirs (pin cushions, frames etc.) flourished in popularity toward the end of the 19th century, as tourists flocked to Niagara Falls and the surrounding area. Earlier, mid-19th century images such as these are more uncommon, and reflect the objects' significance to the individual owners.

Description:
Photo album; Albumen prints (15); Photographs 6 x 4 inches; overall 10 x 8 1/2 inches
Photographically-illustrated album of the 1867 class of the Garrett Biblical Institute (now Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary) in Evanston, Indiana. The album is unusual because many of the albumen-print portraits are accompanied by hand-written "autobiographies" of the subjects. The album begins with a frontispiece-photograph of the college itself, followed by three unidentified portraits. These images are followed by photographs and manuscript biographies of students Samuel Hawley Adams, B.E. Edgell, Samuel Newell Griffith (the album's owner), Clark P. Hand, Gideon Libby, Edward McChesney, William E. Morgan, John Poucher, William A. Spencer, Martin L. Wells, Rufus H. Wilkinson. The students describe their places of birth, upbringings, and what led them down the path of the Lord. The biographies are generally quite thorough, running a couple pages, most relatively straightforward. The longest biography is… Read More

Description:
Albumen print, 4 x 2 1/2 inches overall, Anthony/Brady backmark and modern notations verso.
William Frederick Milton Arny began his storied career as a fund raiser for Bethany College, Virginia where he was engaged in evangelistic and missionary activities. Following this brief, but formative tenure, Arny left Virginia over a dispute with the college's president, notable preacher Alexander Campbell. He moved to Illinois where he developed an unwavering dedication to the abolitionist cause, and became entrenched in campaign efforts to improve infrastructure, education, and farming. In 1857, Arny moved to Kansas, seeking to play a greater role in the territory's struggle for freedom. It was here that he enrolled with the infant Republican Party, and delivered aid during Bleeding Kansas, said to have facilitated delivery of over 8 million pounds of provision between himself and Samuel Pomeroy, the agent responsible for Northern Kansas. Following Lincoln's election in 1861, Arny was appointed Indian Agent… Read More

George Peabody gave two million dollars following the Civil War to establish the Peabody Education Fund, which supported education in the eleven former Confederate states and West Virginia. "Peabody's chief contribution in 1867 was the allocation of $3.5 million for the establishment of the Peabody Education Fund. This fund was primarily intended to advance education in the South and to ameliorate relations in America after the Civil War. Monies from this fund were used to support southern tax-supported schools, to aid black colleges in the South, and to establish the George Peabody College for Teachers and other normal schools in southern states. Like the United States, Britain received a large contribution from Peabody. The Peabody Donation, established in 1862 and later called the Peabody Trust, amounted to $2.5 million. Its funds were intended to provide low rent and… Read More

Description:
Albumen print; Image 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches; sheet 6 x 9 inches.
This handsome portrait is a cropped version of one of seven taken in the summer of 1880 by the Edy Brothers, a London, Ontario-based photo firm, when Whitman was in Canada to visit his close friend Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke.
According to the Whitman archive, Bucke had previously sent Whitman a portrait of himself taken by the Edy Brothers, and he was impressed by the work, declaring, "this is taken by some little man with no reputation at all. It seems to me these little fellows beat our city men: some of the strokes of these out-of-the-way fellows are masterly. . . . The city photographers like things toned down, polished, in the mode." The poet was seemingly unaware that the Edy Brothers, James Newbury and William Daniel, were not exactly artists "with no reputation at all," as their work had been widely recognized and praised throughout Canada and the United States.

Description:
Silver prints (42); From 7 x 9 to 14 x 11 inches, most 8 x 10 inches; Most bearing "Roland Butler" collection stamp verso; Most flush-mounted to board.
A lively look at the Golden Age of the American circus, this dynamic collection of photography comes from the collection of longtime Barnum and Bailey press agent Roland Butler, a consummate showman and coiner of the phrase "the circus is coming."
There are pictures of many notable clowns, such as Lou Jacobs, Emmett Kelly, and Pat Valdo. Photographs related to circus-owners include a portrait of John Ringling taken by the famed circus photographer Edward J. Kelty and a studio portrait of Clifton Sparks Jr., the young son of Sparks Circus founder, shown smiling widely while a lion cub sleeps on his leg. One fun photo shows three trained elephants bearing oversized placards which read "Hoover" "Lowden" and "Dawes," referencing the Republican primary of 1928. Also included are shots of acrobats, roustabouts, lions and their tamers, and other staples of… Read More
