Description:
RARE PAPERBACK IMPORT!! I would've listed VERY GOOD, but there are creases on the covers; also, there is yellowing in the area of the end papers; binding tight.

The scientific approach to botanical study is an entirely European concept. Even the accurate observation of specimens was rare in Asia before Western botanists trained Indian and Chinese artists. The theme of this exhibition is the development of the artist as natural historian. It includes a major group of 17th-century Dutch and of 18th-century English watercolours which have taken us several years to put together. There are also fine examples from the period 1790 to 1820 of drawings by Oriental artists working under the supervision of European botanists. The introduction to the catalogue has been written by Gerta Calmann, author of the major monograph on Ehret.

Tredje Upplagen, 2008. Written mostly in Swedish, with some English. I would've listed LIKE NEW, but there's some writing on the front end papers. SAME/NEXT DAY SHIPPING WITH TRACKING!!! ....... Among 20th century sculptors Carl Milles takes a prominent place, with many important public works to his credit. That Carl Milles work enjoys the on-going interest of the present-day art public, both internationally and in Sweden, is shown by the enthusiastic reception Milles exhibitions have received in Japan, Australia, Italy and Mexico recently. While in his homeland, the largest of all of Milles' sculpture fountains, God Father on the Rainbow, was recently erected. This peace monument was originally conceived in 1946 to stand beside the United Nations headquarters in New York City, but was never realized there. After a half century it finally reached fruition when this 24 meter-tall fountain was erected in the entrance to Stockhom's harbour and unveiled in September 1995 by… Read More

Description:
I would have listed like new; but there is very minor wear on the covers, and there is a smell of, I would guess, old print throughout the book.

Ancient human groups in the Eastern Woodlands of North America were long viewed as homogeneous and stable hunter-gatherers, changing little until the late prehistoric period when Mesoamerican influences were thought to have stimulated important economic and social developments. The authors in this volume offer new, contrary evidence to dispute this earlier assumption, and their studies demonstrate the vigor and complexity of prehistoric peoples in the North American Midwest and Midsouth. These peoples gathered at favored places along midcontinental streams to harvest mussels and other wild foods and to inter their dead in the shell mounds that had resulted from their riverside activities. They created a highly successful, pre-maize agricultural system beginning more than 4,000 years ago, established far-flung trade networks, and explored and mined the… Read More

Could be mistaken for BRAND NEW!!
In Hybrid Practices, essays by established and emerging scholars investigate the rich ecology of practices that typified the era of the Cold War. The volume showcases three projects at the forefront of unprecedented collaboration between the arts and new sectors of industrial society in the 1960s and 70s—Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.), the Art and Technology Project at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (A&T), and the Artist Placement Group (APG) in the UK. The subjects covered include collaborative projects between artists and scientists, commercial ventures and experiments in intermedia, multidisciplinary undertakings, effacing authorship to activate the spectator, suturing gaps between art and government, and remapping the landscape of everyday life in terms of technological mediation. Among the artists discussed in the volume and of interest to a broad public beyond the art world are Bernd and Hilla Becher, John Cage, Hans Haacke, Robert Irwin,… Read More

Description:
This book is in very good condition. From internationally bestselling author of Wild Swans, and co-author of the bestselling Mao: The Unknown Story, this is the dramatic, epic biography of the unusual woman who ruled China for 50 years. A woman, an Empress of immense wealth who was largely a prisoner within the compound walls of her palaces, a mother, a ruthless enemy, and a brilliant strategist: Chang makes a compelling case that Cixi was one of the most formidable and enlightened rulers of any nation. Cixi led an intense and singular life. Chosen at the age of 12 to be a concubine by the Emperor Xian Feng, she gave birth to his only male heir who at four was designated Emperor when his father died. In a brilliant move, Cixi enlisted the help of the Emperor's widow and orchestrated a coup that ousted the regents and made Cixi sole Regent. Chang gives us a complex, riveting portrait of Cixi: her ruthlessness in fighting off rivals; her curiosity to learn; her reliance on Westerners who she… Read More

Bradley R. Clampitt's The Confederate Heartland examines morale in the Civil War's western theater -- the region that witnessed the most consistent Union success and Confederate failure, and the battleground where many historians contend that the war was won and lost. Clampitt's western focus provides a glimpse into the hearts and minds of Confederates who routinely witnessed the defeat of their primary defenders, the Army of Tennessee.
This book tracks morale through highs and lows related to events on and off the battlefield, and addresses the lingering questions of when and why western Confederates recognized and admitted defeat. Clampitt digs beneath the surface to illustrate the intimate connections between battlefield and home front, and demonstrates a persistent dedication to southern independence among residents of the Confederate heartland until that spirit was broken on the battlefields of Middle Tennessee in late 1864.
The western Confederates examined in… Read More

Welcome is the name of the sugar plantation which had been the property of the Probyo family for several generations. Paul Probyn, the owner at the time the story is written, is also the guardian of his younger brother and sister, Nicky and Tessa. In due course he becomes engaged to Karen Adais, whose father owns the adjacent property. The arrival of Nicky, a gay and careless youth fresh from Oxford, tests the friendship of the two brothers to its utmost limit. Jamaica (where Miss Clarke has been living after her adventures as an evacuee from Italy and France in 1940) has provided the writer with a fresh scene for her well-known descriptive powers.
