Description:
9 1/8" x 8 1/4" 48 leaves/96 pages Studious and engaged young pupil, Vivian C. Friend maintained a "Graduation Journal" throughout her time high school in Randall, Kansas. In this journal, Friend and her classmates record significant events, inside jokes, and farewell messages. During her sophomore year Vivian transferred from Randall High School to Randall Rural High School. Friend was a member of the student government in which she held various positions, including president in her freshman year and assistant editor during her senior year. She also held minor roles in school plays and musicals. Farewell messages from classmates shower Friend with praise and many demand attention in her later years. One reads: "When you are old and gray sit down by the fireside and read this little letter. While reading it let your mind relate these facts these facts and live again as you once did...". Another recounts of the senior party in 1926: "One little senior girls was too timid to invite her "Boy Friend"… Read More

Description:
This was a prep-school keepsake scrapbook for Challen Rogers Parker, Jr., nicknamed "Billy", 1909-1990 - an obituary and photo of his grave are listed at findagrave.com, and an appreciation can be found at the Princeton Alumni Weekly website. The album itself, a large landscape-oriented binder, measures 17" x 12 1/2" x 2 1/2", emblazoned with a proud white 'H' on a 'Yale Blue' background. The binding is loose, and the contents are mostly tucked in. The various items are overflowing, and would bring much enjoyment for those who like to pore over the minutiae of prep-school days. Sixty photos in a lovely sepia tone are dispersed throughout, a dozen of which are class- or team-photos. Mr. Parker kept to the template printed in this "College Memory" book - friendship pages, athletic record pages, etc. - but most of the volume of this collection is taken up by handouts, flyers, notes, programs and the like. It is possible that Parker worked for the administrative office on campus, or else had a job… Read More

Wolf, Jr. - With - Ciro-Flex & Dollina Perfex 55" in pencil flourish. Most pages indicate which of the three cameras was utilized. This photographer is clearly perfecting his craft and relishing his improvements - the album is lovingly arranged, with careful layouts on every page (many double-page spreads follow a 6-12 format); city and rural landscapes are featured, as well as views of buildings and houses, many boats and ships, and - most especially - personal portraits. Photos are lovingly arranged at right angles or, when thematically presented, diagonally. Several families in the photographer's social and family circle are documented with full-page spreads: The Sankeys, The Mortons, The Buehls ('near Allentown'); The Wyllies Numerous… Read More

Description:
11 x 11" black 2-ring binder from around 1938 to 1940, featuring around 85 black-and-white and hand-colored photos from expeditions that Charles D. Coe took to South America, Central America, Mexico, Cuba, and Jamaica. Charles seems to have been an avid explorer and collector; one photo postcard shows the "Tropical Collection" that he and his wife put together at Granby Road in South Hadley Falls Massachusetts. There are photos of the Aztec calendar and Mesoamerican pyramids, but most photos are stunning hand-tinted large photos of men, women, and children. Some of these photos of people are in black-and-white and duplicated in larger hand-colored prints in the album. There is also a hand drawn map, which says at the top "Mt. Cotopaxi, An Active Volcano - Perpetual Snow." Mt. Cotopaxi is in Ecuador, and another photo is identified as "On the San Blos Coast, which is in Panama. There is also a Christmas card from Bolivia. At the back of the album there is a photo of 2 men with a large fish and actor… Read More

This partially filled album contains around 14 large albumen photos measuring between 7.25 x 6.75" and 9.25 x 7.5" which are glued to the pages. Description:
10 x 13" black string-bound scrapbook with a map of the White Sulphur Springs area of West Virginia pasted to the cover. The album is filled with correspondence Diane Curtis received from soldiers that she worked with during her time as a nurse's aide at Ashford General Hospital around 1944. There are several scraps of paper with poems, Christmas cards, and clippings pasted into the album, but the main focus is given to around 41 letters, most of which are still tucked into their opened envelopes. Curtis appears to have left her position at Ashford to return to school and the majority of the letters take place after this event, given that many of the men she corresponds with discuss her dislike of school. Correspondents include Merrick H. Bigelow, Alfred W. White, PFC Mathern. Some of the men who wrote to Curtis had left Ashford to rejoin the military, while others remained at the hospital. The men tell Curtis about where they are stationed, what they are up to, school, and even Curtis' boy problems.… Read More
