[Washington, D.C.?], 1941. Broadside or Poster. 28 x 20 inches. Small crease in left margin; faint red pencil mark at edge of top margin; near fine. Patriotic Second World War poster, a superb example, by American illustrator C.C. Beall, issued by the United States Army Recruiting Service.  The design of the poster cleverly incorporates vignette illustrations of the home front and of military personnel to form a composite bust portrait of "Uncle Sam" whose tilted head and firm jaw project resolve and determination to fight the war.  The poster's dual function was to encourage military recruiting and, more pointedly here, civilian participation in the war effort.  On the left there can be seen a factory worker, a scientist, a nurse, and a farmer holding a sheaf of wheat that easily morphs into Uncle Sam's beard; on the right, an airman, a sailor, and a soldier holding a rifle with bayonet.  Printed at the lower corner of the image is a patriotic poem by Jack Childs that concludes "So-'Keep 'em Flying!'" [Likely Maryland. May 10, 1910.] Drawing: 8 x 9¾ inches, accomplished on wove paper, in a modest wood frame, measuring 11¾ x 13¾ inches, unglazed (no framer's glass). Toning, scattered paper abrasions. A bold and strong image. A charming and fairly-accomplished drawing of the main residence at Thorpland, Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County, Maryland. Whimsically, the artist ("E.C.J." - signing lower left) shows a young man sitting on a window sill with his legs dangling outside. Thorpland has been recognized by the Maryland Historic Trust as a significant historical property. It has been referred to as Gladacres, Linville Manor, or the Bowie-Johnson House. One of 1500 copies printed. Noted work by this New Orleans native, discussing the "Negro Problem" and especially critical of the Southern penal system. "He was a zealous advocate with pen and voice of changed election laws, of reform in prison administration, of abolition of the contract labor system, and of justice for the negro. Gabriel Cabrera Infante (2939-2005), "one of Cuba's foremost literary pens, published Tres Tristes Tigres in 1967, having already exiled himself to Europe. Subtitle: "Selected from writings first published in The Open Road, over a period of more than thirty years." The Calverts published the small magazine The Open Road "which in 1938 had been published for thirty years by Bruce Calvert and his wife, Anna Gulbrandsen Calvert. The magazine was devoted to the Philosophy of Joy and to the Religion of Right Living, also to the open road, the open mind, and the love of nature - something along the line of Thoreau. A very good clean copy. The translation of Perversité (1925) was actually by Jean Rhys, but attributed to Ford Madox Ford.

Vienna and Leipzig: Universal-Edition A.G., 1922. Folio. 42 pages. Original color pictorial wrappers. Modern ownership signature on first page. Lower-outer corner bumped, wrappers edgeworn, else very good. Sheet music for eleven piano pieces in the modernist "Grotesque" style by contemporary composers including Béla Bartók, Ernst Krenek, Karol Rathaus, Rudolph Réti, Alois Hába, Wilhelm Grosz, and Egon Wellesz, several of whose compositions were deemed "degenerate art" during the Nazi era. Compiler Carl Seelig provides an introduction on the nature of the Grotesque in German, French, and English. The cover features a design by the renowned Vienna-based artist and puppeteer Richard Teschner (1879-1948), featuring a Harlequin-like contortionist. Grotesken-Album is one of the first publications of the music of Karol Rathaus (1895-1954), the long under-appreciated composer. Rathus warmly inscribed and signed the present copy in the year of publication.

Inspirational poster featuring a photographic portrait of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. against a rainbow-like background.  The poster was designed by Carol Livingston.  A quote at the top of the poster from Dr. King's seminal "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, simultaneously evokes the stirring patriotic song America ("My Country, 'Tis of Thee") by Samuel Francis Smith: "From every mountainside, let freedom ring!"

Five small printer's ornament illustrations of winged cherub heads and a Masonic "eye." Minor paper losses at folds affect one letter of text; closed tears at fold lines especially along left edge; some foxing; very good. Antebellum broadside outlining the order of exercises for the centennial of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons of South Carolina. The lyrics for two anthems and an ode sung during the celebration are printed out in full. Some of the named participants include Rev. E. B. Hort, Grand Chaplain, S. Henry Dickson, M. D., Past Master of Orange Lodge, No. 14 (who delivered the address), M. S. Revees [sic], superintendent of music, and Henry Buist, Grand Marshal of the Procession. Ref. Hummel 2363: one copy at ScU. Broadside advertising regular performances of African American "Plantation Spirituals" at South Carolina's Cypress Gardens and sung "...entirely by local colored people connected with Dean Hall Plantation and its neighboring Promise Land Church." Front free endpaper with mild waviness; various pages have faint age-toning at the very most outer edges, in the margins; scattered pages have soft creases from handling; a presentable copy; good. First edition. The anthropologist Margaret Mead described this photo documentary and essay as an "astute staccato comment on present and needed changes in sensory modes, against a background of fantasied primitive life, annotated by some extraordinary photographs."

East Aurora: "Done into this book by the Roycrofters..." [1937]. First Edition. Small 8vo, patterned brown boards bound in DuPont "Fabrikoid", frontispiece map, 34 pages, untrimmed, leaves unopened in French-fold style, brown silk ribbon. Illustrated with ten half-tones from photographs and in near fine condition. A pleasing copy of a late Roycrofters title. Carpenter was accompanied on his African big game hunting safari by the famous hunters, Don Ker and Sidney Downey, where he hunted buffalo, rhinoceros, and lion. Robert Ruliph Morgan (R. R. M.) Carpenter (1877-1949) married into the Delaware DuPont family helping the company to expand and diversify beyond its traditional manufacturing of explosives. Carpenter led the company to produce "Fabrikoid," one of DuPont's early successful non-explosive products-a type of artificial leather widely used in various products, including this book.

Philadelphia: Printed for the Committee at the United States Book and Job Print. Office, 20 pages. Pamphlet, removed. Very good. A scarce mid-nineteenth address delivered before the Delta Phi and Athenaean Societies at Newark College, in Newark, Delaware, now the University of Delaware.
