The plates apparently descended to Carel Allard (active 1673-1707) for he published it with the plates in a second state, bearing his own name (known only from a copy at Yale University Library). Ad 2: A rare print series of tramps, cripples and beggars, originally engraved by Hondius after designs by the Dutch painter Pieter Jansz, Quast (ca. 1605-1647), first published in 1638 and still bearing that date at the end. Items 5, 15, 18 and 22 are complete series.With many contemporary manuscript annotations in French, written in pencil and brown ink. About 25 leaves have been removed from the book, probably including additional prints. The head of a few prints in the Landry landscapes and Allard military scenes (ads 17 & 18) very slightly shaved at the head, with only about 1 mm of the sky or tree tops lost, a small scuff on one scene and some small stains in some prints of the Bonnet circus series, affecting only the border of one print, but most prints remain in good condition. In the same year, Antonio Craesbeeck published another edition with the same title but with less content and with a different frontispiece. This collection of works is made up of separate publications.Os Lusiadas is the great epic poem of Portuguese exploration, in the original Portuguese, a monument of Portuguese literature that gave a Homeric aura to Renaissance voyages of discovery and colonial conquests, here together with the other works of Camões. Camões's work was first published in Portuguese at Lisbon in 1572. The original Spanish was first published in four parts at Barcelona by Carlos Amorós in 1531 entitled Los cuatro libros del valerosisimo caballero Félix Magno. The romance deals with the life and history of Félix Magno, the son of King Falángriz of Great Britain and Queen Clarinea, on a quest for glory. A large part of the work is dedicated to struggles with Moors and Turks. Like most chivalric novels, it was heavily influenced by stories of King Arthur and similar romances like Amadis de Gaule. He became active in provincial politics in 1845, shortly before the Praieira revolt in Pernambuco of 1848-1849. He actively helped maintain public order during this revolt and was rewarded for it by the government by being elected as a general and provincial deputy continuously from then on. He corresponded personally with the emperor in this role, so he could write his work partly from his own observations.In general, Dom Pedro II was well liked. His father and grandfather had helped Brazil win it's independence and he himself was seen as a good ruler. The country flourished while he was on the throne. 559, [1]; 72 pp.First and only edition of a well-illustrated and comprehensive study of the orchids of Europe and the Mediterranean, published posthumously by the daughter of Edmond Gustave Camus (1852-1915), a pharmacist and botanist fascinated by the intricate taxonomy of the family Orchidaceae. Aimée Antoinette Camus (1879-1965) worked together with her father on this project until his death in 1915. She would continue the research and finally published the present work, which is preceded by an obituary by Henri Lecomte and a bibliography of the elder Camus's his works. The present copy not only has the regular 110 of the 122 plates of the first part of the atlas coloured by hand, but also 10 of the 11 plates of the second part. XXIV, 432 pp.First edition of the synopsis of the third and almost entirely rewritten edition of the Flore française. The first edition of the Flore française or "French flora" appeared in 1778 in three volumes, compiled by the French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829). "Lamarck designed the Flore française specifically for the task of plant identification and used dichotomous keys, which are classification tools that allow the user to choose between opposing pairs of morphological characters to achieve this end" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). The present synopsis of the Flore française consists of brief descriptions of in total 4688 different plants, all subdivided according to order, family and genus. Extremely rare series of 18 beautiful hand-coloured lithographs showing stage designs for the Real Teatro San Carlo, one of Italy's most famous opera houses. The striking plates include scenery for Zelmira (1822), the acclaimed opera by Rossini, who was the artistic director of the San Carlo from 1815 to 1822. Each lithograph has a hand-written caption and is dedicated to Maria Cristina Ferdinanda di Borbone, principessa delle Due Sicilie (1806-1878).Pasquale Canna was a distinguished, prolific, neo-classical stage designer who made a career as a painter and scenographer in Parma, Venice, Milan and Naples, working for such famous theatres as La Scala (Milan), the San Carlo and the Teatro del Fondo (Naples). Added is an even rarer missive from the directors of the VOC, on the misconduct of the company's personnel, including a summary of the case against Canter. The emblems depict figures, some with angelic wings or aureoles, each accompanied by a Biblical verse in Latin or a motto in Latin and a distich in French. Some of the plates are signed by Jean Messager, others are after Philippe de Mallery and Gillis van Schoor. The first edition, with the same number of plates, was published at Paris in 1631 by Jean Messager, Pierre Mariette's predecessor. The Antwerp bookseller Michael Snyders had published 39 of the 118 emblems in his 1626 Amoris divini et humani effectus and 83 (including those 39) in his 1629 Amoris divini et humani antipathia, printed in Antwerp by Geeraerdt van Wolsschaten I, which Snyders reissued there in 1655. It contains a collection of medicines and remedies for common diseases and ailments, based on different sources as well as the author's own experience. Therefore, according to the author, the book contains many new remedies. The first part deals with internal diseases, including fevers, dysentery, yellow fever, fainting, epilepsy, nose bleeds, lyse and worms. Capueel stands in the Galenic tradition of humorism, with bile from the pancreas as the main reason for fevers. The second part treats external diseases, including ailments to the eyes, teeth and skin (such as burns, mange and wounds). It deals with laws concerning women in cases of death (of the husband or the woman herself), divorce and adultery and women's rights concerning legacies, property and debts, often comparing them with the laws concerning men. The text is written in Latin, but Carben occasionally includes some German law texts. The work is dedicated to Daniel Kornmann. The binding has a curious unidentified coat of arms and crowned cipher added in silver paint on the boards. With the bookplate of J.A. Molhuysen on paste-down. Internally in very good condition, with only a few tiny spots. Originally published in Italian, also in 1645, they here published together, translated by François Lahier.Although the title of Cardim's work might suggest it discusses only Japan, it is especially important for its extensive accounts of Thailand and Vietnam, among the earliest we have, and also describes St. Paul's College in Macau, China, the first Western University in the Far East, where Cardim served as rector from 1632 to 1636. It covers the history, religions (notably Buddhism) and customs of the regions. It includes a wide variety of practical applications, including the measurement of surface areas, the determination of the volumes and centres of gravity of solid bodies, and problems of dynamics. With a contemporary owner's name on the title-page, a later 18th-century manuscript note on the endleaf and a couple manuscript notes in the text. A failed attempt to wash out the owner's name on the title-page has left a small faint stain. With the title-page slightly foxed and an occasional minor spot, but still in very good condition and with very large margins. The present Latin edition, translated and edited by Antoine du Verdier (1544-1600), who also made a French translation, is dedicated to Henricus Memmius, dated 1581. The privilege, granted jointly to two publishers, Estienne Michel and Bartholomeus Honorat, is dated 7 April 1581.
