Covers rubbed along edges with shallow chips / tears at spine ends, some creasing to back, and a nickel-sized abrasion to top front corner, presumably from prior sticker removal. Gaps visible at hinges, but glue between spine and text block is holding soundly. Corner-creasing to first few pages with various lighter creases to thin paper throughout, but pages unmarked and generally crisp. Binding is sound. First English-language translation of de Sade's unfinished erotic / pornographic novel, written in secret while he was imprisoned in the Bastille. The Olympia Press also issued a two-volume edition the same month. Octavo; publisher's green cloth, gilt-lettered spine, brown glazed endpapers; iv,456,[8]pp. Minor scuffing to cloth margins, spine rather significantly scuffed and front hinge weak, ex-contemporary circulation library with manuscript markings to front flyleaf, title page, and first leaf of text, light soil throughout textblock, brief paper flaws to all endpapers, else a Good to Very Good copy. Scarce American edition of Blackmore's melodrama set in his native Middlesex in which lovers Kit and Kitty find themselves repeatedly rent asunder by a scheming stepmother. This copy evidently made the rounds while part of the Stevens Plains, Maine, circulating library.

Stitching perished leaving most signatures loose but present, brief staining to bottom spine-edge corner, else Good to Very Good, internally clean and sound. Detailed lecture on the requirements of the minister in speaking intelligibly to his congregation, for example "By using great care in defining and explaining out words, where there is any danger of a misunderstanding" (p. 13). Daggett also warns against "speaking in an unknown tongue, or in ambiguous, doubtful terms," as it is a "gross affront to common sense, and a manifest imposition upon those whom we pretend to teach" (p. 21). Earliest sermon preached by the youthful Congregationalist minister Daniel Dana (1771-1859) upon his ordination as the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Newburyport. Dana struggles out loud in this sermon with the difficulties faced by his fellow-ministers: "Some [congregants] are pleased only with a low and grovelling style; while others can be satisfied with such a one only, as is refined and elegant" (p. 17). "The foundation of Mr. Whittelsey's eminence in life was laid in superior natural endowments and an early thirst for knowledge. Suavity of temper and dignity of manners, with an early and decided choice of religion, commanded respect. From youth to old age he had a reputation which is better than gold" (p. 21). Dana, who had gained popularity with his vocal support of the War, states here that "From the natural parity of mankind it clearly follows, that all sovereignty is ultimately in the people, or their representatives. They may, at any time, regulate the succession, limit the sovereign, or abolish the kingly government" (p. 19). A few pages further Dana expands upon his blueprint of the ideal government, "which gives encouragement to schools and public worship [and] hath every way the advantage of one that neglects them, in regard of civil order and happiness" (p. 25).
