Howard reported extensively on US affairs in the Dakota and Montana territories, including coverage on the Battle of Little Bighorn. When he passed away in 1893, his obituary called him "one of the best known newspaper men in the state of Illinois."This portrait was photographed and published by C.D. Mosher as part of the US Centennial.

He gave at least one public lecture during 1863 where he was billed as "The Oriental Lecturer." Individuals who attended his lecture could purchase a short book describing the culture and traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Carte de Viste images of himself and his subjected were prepared and registered by Charles D. Fredricks & Co., 587 Broadway, New York.
