A Continental engraved steel dagger with a finger ring, in mahogany case. Evidently French but of unknown origin and date, it is apparently a reproduction of an earlier example. Overall 15.5 inches (39.5 cm) in length and with an inscription on the over the handle reading  "DOLEE TE" and then within the central section lengthwise of the blade "SCHWAN LA GARDE LE DE FRANCE." Oxidation, marks, and wear. Case 3 1/4 x 20 x 9 inches, rather worn and partially damaged.

Signed lithograph by the legendary jazz trumpeter, being a limited signed edition promotional poster for his 1989 Warner Bros. album Amandla.  Miles signed 150 numbered copies of this poster to be used as promotional items, the present example numbered #92/150 and signed in silver ink, with Davis adding a single musical note to his name. The 17 x 35 inch poster has been framed to 26 x 43 inches overall and is in fine condition. Davis began drawing and painting in earnest in 1980, during a period of recovery from addiction and other health issues. While largely overshadowed by his music during his lifetime, Davis' visual art was used for the covers of the albums "Star People" and "Amandla", as well as the backdrops for several of his live performances, and has seen gallery showings around the world in the years since the musician''s death. Amandla was Davis's third and final collaboration with producer Marcus Miller and incorporates elements of go-go, funk, and swing jazz.

Numbered copy (no. 522 out of 990) of the first important French biography of the Spanish composer.  Small quarto.  Original wrappers.  64 pp. plus four pages with plates. Original wrappers wrapped in onionskin paper.  9.75 x 7.5 inches (25 x 19.2 cm).  In excellent condition.Roland-Manuel studied with Ravel and became a friend of his.  He later taught at the Paris Conservatoire.

Signed original photograph of the great American dancer in costume for an unidentified performance as part of her American Dance Quartet, with a stamp on the verso from The American Festival [Boston, 1960]. Lavallade has inscribed "To Paul / My very best wishes / and excuse my forgetfulness / Sincerely / Carmen de Lavallade." Corners worn with two small double staple holes upper left and right edges, else fine.  10 x 8 inches (25.4 x 20.3 cm.). The American actress, educator, choreographer, and dancer Carmen de Lavallade studied with Lester Horton, becoming lead dancer of Lester Horton Dance Theater (Los Angeles, California) during her tenure. The first and only authorized, if only posthumously published collection of the French composer's reviews.  In French.  Small folio.  Original wrappers.  145 pp.  Signature and date in French, "Lila Nyffenegger 1er janvier 1924."  10.25 x 7.75 inches (26 x 19.5 inches).  Upper right corner slightly bumped; spine minimally frayed; else in fine condition.Debussy decided to publish a collection of his substantial work as a music critic before 1914. Atlas folio, 17 x 22 inches [42 x 55 cm], including 95 double-page maps, some folding, by Delisle dated between 1700-1745, most hand-colored in outline and with watercolor detailing. Without any preliminaries, title, or index (as issued), this atlas having been made to individual order from stocks of maps held by the publisher. With the maps numbered sequentially and titled in a contemporary hand on the front-facing right blanks, lacking numbers 14,17, 34 and 49 (not present in hand-numbered sequence).  The maps from no. 1 to 83 make up a regular atlas of the contemporary (i.e. 18th-century) world, while the maps of the last section are of a historical nature (e.g. no. 84 "Table of the Earth as known to the ancients").  In generally fine condition, with printing and colors generally clean and fresh throughout. Plates folded and tipped down on stubs, with sewing generally strong.  Moderate staining on some plates, creases along folds, some with tears or old paper… Read More

S de D." Translated, in part, from the Russian: "The direction of S.D Diaghilev's ballet certifies that Sergueï Mikhaïlovitch Lifar is the first artist of this ballet..." Purple and red ownership stamps of Serge Lifar, originally obtained at the sale of his library. Born in 1905, Russian-born, Serge Lifar was introduced to dance in 1920 by Bronislava Nijinska, under whom he began to study. From the collection of English orchestra manager John Charles.This concert was Dohnanyi's first appearance in Liverpool.  He was then a rising star.

Autograph quotation signed from the distinguished French novelist of such historical classics as The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Dumas has neatly penned a quotation of the first four lines from his "Billet d'Hamlet à Ophélie," this opening portion consisting of his translation of Shakespeare. The quotation reads: "Doutez qu'au firmament l'étoile soit de flamme/ Doutez que dans les cieux marche l'astre du jour/ La sainte vérité doutez-en dans votre âme/ Doutez de tout enfin, mais non de mon amour./ Hamlet II acte, Mr. Al[exandre] Dumas" and inscribed below "Pour l'album de Madamoiselle Fanny Debas. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Three signed pencil drawings by the American Modernist painter, depicting a dancing figure, likely Isadora Duncan, who was his favorite subject. Each drawing signed at the foot by Walkowitz. Toned edges, a few short creases and tears. Each 10.5 x 7.75 inches (27 x 17.5 cm).Walkowitz first met Duncan, who had captured the attention of the avant-garde with her innovative dance, at the studio of Auguste Rodin in 1906. Walkowitz was captivated by Duncan's spontaneous and free language of movement, and over time made thousands of drawings of her dancing form, even after her death in 1927. Walkowitz said later of Duncan: "...she was a Muse. She had no laws. She didn't dance according to the rules. She created. Her body was music..."
