New endpapers, originals not preserved, half-title and fronitispiece present, pages probably not trimmed. Ex-libris Bernard Zufall with his bookplate to endpapers and stamp to verso of title page. Zufall was a performer himself (the "Human Encyclopedia"), and donated a huge collection of memory & mnemonics books to Yale. This copy was a duplicate. An early title, uncommon in the trade. This was the final edition; the first was published in 1697. (Young: Bibliography of Memory, p. 13.)

As Edward Stone pointed out (Studies in the Novel, Winter 1975), Nimrod closely resembles Herman Melville's Moby-Dick in many ways, but in no way mentions or credits it; nor do either of the two reviews in Harper's Magazine, including one of 10,000 words. "That the silence regarding Melville's greatest novel could be shared by author and reviewer of Nimrod convincingly demonstrates that within a single generation Melville had become the 'buried author.

From the publisher's announcement: "In the 1950's d'Azevedo became friends with the Washoe Indians who lived in Western Nevada and on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada in California.
