A printing from the same year as the first edition. Gaboriau was a master of French detective fiction, eclipsed in English only by Doyle's 'Sherlock Holmes' stories.

The author has also signed in full beneath his printed name, which he has crossed through. The recipients are Mr and Mrs Otto Penzler; Penzler is the owner of New York's Mysterious Press, a publisher of numerous crime and thriller writers including the James Bond novelists John Gardner and Jeffrey Deaver. This copy is from the significant Ian Fleming collection of Martin Schøyen (b.1940), with his bookplate.
