[Antwerp,: Plantin,, 1579].. 387 by 280mm (15.25 by 11 inches).. Prints,""Spectandum dedit Ortelius mortalib. orbem, Abraham Ortelius Engraved portrait, with letterpress text to verso. Galle's iconic image of Ortelius, based on an original portrait by Adriaen Key, was included in every edition of Ortelius's atlas of the world from 1579, the 'Theatrum orbis terrarum'. It is captioned in Latin, """"Spectandum dedit Ortelius mortalib. orbem, Orbi Spectandum Galleus Ortelium"""" ('Ortelius allowed mortals to see the world, Galle allows world to see Ortelius'). Indeed, the engraver of the portrait was Philips Galle, who published the first miniature version of Ortelius's 'Theatrum...' in 1577, under the title 'Epitome Theatri Orteliani'. Adriaen Key's (c1544-1589) is the only known portrait of Abraham Ortelius to have been painted during his lifetime. Like Ortelius, he was a native of Antwerp, and became one of the leading portraitists in that city. He became a master in Antwerp's Guild of St. Luke (the… Read More

Gemma Frisius (1508-1555) was a Dutch physician, mathematician, cartographer, philosopher and instrument maker, creating important globes and improving the mathematical instruments of his day. In Louvain, he tutored none other than Gerard Mercator, who executed the engraving for some of his globes. Alongside this star student and Abraham Ortelius, Frisius came to be considered one of the founders of the Netherlandish school of cartography. Frisius's portrait was painted by Maarten van Heemskerck in the mid-sixteenth century, and later published as an engraving by Philips Galle. It shows the cartographer wearing a broad flat-cap and embroidered jacket. [2] 405 by 800mm (16 by 31.5 inches).. Two engravings. Robert Gallon (1845-1925) was a painter and lithographer, specialising in landscape and topography. This pair of atmospheric prints of the Thames show the effects of industrialisation in Victorian London, with steamboats on the river and cranes along the bank. The originals were painted in 1889, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, and were presumably enough of a success to warrant their being made into prints. The prints were restruck in 1980, but the originals are rare.

Pair of engraved maps, each on two sheets joined, watermark of ladder in shield under six-pointed star (Woodward 253), to all four sheets. Fine examples of the most influential sixteenth century maps of Central Asia and the Middle East, by Giacomo Gastaldi, the greatest cartographer of his era. Not only are these works the most accurate depiction of the area to date, but would go on to dominate the European view of the area for the rest of the sixteenth century. Giacomo Gastaldi (c1500-1567), originally from Piedmont, established himself as a cartographer in Venice, where he was given the notable title of 'Cosmographer to the Republic'. He was a prolific mapmaker, with a body of work numbering at least 109 pieces, including contributions to the 1548 Venice edition of Ptolemy's 'Geogra a', and Ramusio's 'Navigationi et viaggi'. San Jose, CA,: Amen International Inc.,, 1995.. 965 by 608mm. (38 by 24 inches).. Colour printed poster on glossy paper, with areas embossed in gold. A colourful poster illustrated with a map of Silicon Valley, showing the locations of major technology companies and what their offices looked like. Published in 1995, with a calendar for the following year, this map was made during a pivotal time in the technology industry, when commercial use of the internet started to become widespread. Consequently, 1995 was the beginning of a surge of internet startups, many of which followed their software predecessors to Silicon Valley. Cisco Systems, the company that commissioned this map, was one of Silicon Valley's companies that caught the internet wave at its crest. Cisco was founded in 1984 by Sandy Lerner and Leonard Bosack. The company's name is derived from nearby San Francisco, and their logo represents the Golden Gate Bridge. The company's first product was a close adaptation of the Stanford… Read More

A key plan lists 113 buildings, gateways, and defensive points. To the left of the plan the French trenches are highlighted in yellow, with the range and direction of the artillery in red. The Siege of Brussels took place between January and February 1746 during the War of the Austrian Succession. A French army under the overall command of Maurice de Saxe, in a bold and innovative winter campaign besieged and captured the city of Brussels, which was then the capital of the Austrian Netherlands, from its Austrian garrison. Amsterdam,, 1669.. Folio atlas (460 by 290mm), title, 24 double-page engraved charts, and one full-page chart, contemporary speckled calf, with fillet border, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, rubbed. The third book ('Straets-boeck') of Pieter Goos's 'Lighting Colom' ('Zeespiegel'), which details the Mediterranean navigation. This 'Straets-boeck' – or 'Straights Book', so named after the Straits of Gibraltar – was first published by Goos with Dutch text in 1662 and, in that same year, with a different title page as part III of the 'Zee-Spieghel'. The charts in the work were newly engraved by Goos, but the text was borrowed from Jacobsz Lootsman's 'Straets-boeck' of 1648. In the contents the author explains the differences between the handling of the compass by the Dutch and Italians, and that the information in this work is adapted to Dutch use. He also explains why the charts have no degrees of latitude, as well as the use of the backstaff. The list with "The height of Som… Read More

Chicago,, 1948.. 364 by 482mm. (14.25 by 19 inches).. Chromolithograph map. A lively pictorial map of Chicago Zoo, chartered as the Chicago Zoological Society in 1921 and opened as Brookfield Zoo in 1934, on land donated by Edith Rockefeller McCormick in 1919. The map's artist, Ralph Graham (1901-1980), was born in Cheyenne. He graduated from Chicago Institute of Art in 1930, and exhibited at Chicago's Century of Progress World's Fair in 1933. Given the Zoo map's similarity in style to the famous, but anonymous, 'Map of Chicago's Gangland', 1931, it seems very likely that Graham may have been responsible for that map too. Between 1935 and 1936, he was acting as supervisor of applied arts under the Works Progress Administration, when he visited the Zoo, and oversaw the creation of tabletops for the refectory, featuring animal figures, set in the new medium of inlaid Formica. He volunteered for service during WWII, and on his return, in 1948, Director Robert Bean appointed Graham as assistant… Read More

He was known amongst his peers for his somewhat unorthodox living arrangements. Joseph Farington recorded in his diary that Marlow moved to Twickenham to live in a ménage à trois with a butcher and his wife whom he had met in Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens (Gatrell). Engraved map, fine original hand-colour, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into original green cloth slipcase, with publisher's label. Greenough (1778-1855) was the first President of the Geological Society, and was later President of the Royal Geographical Society. The Geological Society was founded in 1807, but Smith never became a member, although his geological work that was the basis of the map was well underway by then. Greenough had actually been shown a copy of an early version of Smith's map by the surveyor John Farey in 1802, who later attacked Greenough in the press for his "unhandsome conduct" in the matter (Philosophical Magazine). There were probably two reasons for this: personally, Smith probably could not afford the membership fee; and professionally, he advocated a method of differentiating between strata using the fossils in each layer. This theory went against the prevailing scientific… Read More
