Description:
Woodland, CA: Majestic Press, 1968. First Printing. VG+ pictorial wraps (5.5 x 7.5), with light edgewear and rubbing. SIGNED on the inside of both covers: Charles H. Gardner The roving dance the dance! 1969 (front) and Charles H. Gardner along with his permanent NYC address (rear). In his Foreword, Paul Mapes describes Gardner as a journeyman poet, prospective saint, and madman who at the time lived in Allensworth, an all black settlement of shacks in an alkali plain along the Southern Pacific tracks just barely into Kern county California from the north. The water contains arsenic. Nothing grows. Five sections include The Roving Wino, The Beatnik Fish, The House of Nuts, Death of a President, and Death of a Cemetery. Poems address racism, the American landscape (numerous rich meditations on place), politics, and the assassinations of JFK and MLK Jr. No copies in commerce, with only five holdings in OCLC (Emory, NYU, NYPL, Harvard, UC Davis).
