Description:
[1], [1 blank], [44], 660, [60] pp.Detailed botanical description of Frisian and Northwest European plants, trees, flowers and herbs by the Frisian historian Simon Abbes Gabbema (1628-1688). Although Gabbema was appointed history writer of Frisia in 1659 by the States of Frisia because of his learning and knowledge concerning Frisian history, he also knew a lot about botany. The frontispiece is often ascribed to Jan Luyken (Klaversma & Hannema 545). Altogether this work can be considered a compilation of Gabbema's own botanical knowledge enriched with ancient knowledge, forming an extensive Frisian and Northwestern European flora. The present copy contains two leaves not normally present (4*5 and 5*5: the STCN notes them only in the copy at the Royal Library in The Hague): two laudatory poems by J. Vollenhove and H. Sweerts. Binding a bit dirty, frontispiece a little browned and repaired, some small stains throughout the book, some paper corners a little frayed, a small hole in leaf 2Y1, but otherwise…

[8], 199, 100-456 [= 556], [4] pp. (pp. 113-116 and 201-204 misbound).Rare first and only edition of the Dutch translation of the Artzneybuch of Oswald Gabelkover (1538-1616), who was the personal physician to the dukes of Württemberg. It was originally printed in 1589 under the patronage of Ludwig von Württemberg and soon followed by several other editions. The present translation was made by Carolus Battus, a physician in Dordrecht, who was the first to translate medical works into Dutch. He is known as the author of one of the earliest Dutch cookery books, which was published together with his translation of Wirtsung's Arzney Buch (1568) with the confusingly similar title: Medicyn-boeck. Battus present translation served as served as the basis for the English translation The boock of physicke, which was published a year later, also in Dordrecht. With old owners' inscriptions on title-page and flyleaf ("A. (or R?) Van Wachtendonck") and some manuscript citations in French, Greek and Latin and…

Description:
(12), 143, (1); 159, (1) pp.Rare early edition of the first volume and first edition of the second volume of art students' text books of the 18th century, published by Ferdinando Galli Bibiena (1657-1743), teacher at the Academia Clementina, and the founder of the famous dynasty of scenographic designers. He had been trained in the Bolognese school of illusionists and later returned to Bologna to continue the tradition. The first volume of the present student's manual, first published in 1725, contains a concise text book on architecture for students at the Academy Clementina at Bologna, based on the author's Architettura Civile from 1711, much reduced and abridged for the convenience of the students of architecture. The beautiful and orginal plates include some beautiful Baroque settings for theatrical scenes. Bibiena's perspective designs for theatre scenery revolutionized the Baroque stage, and also profoundly influenced artists like Piranesi. Fine copies in contemporary Italian vellum.l Fowler…

Description:
[24], 84, 36 pp.Ninth edition (the first after the dead of the author) of this satirical mock-heroic poem in six cantos which had been first published anonymously by Garth in 1699. Although the satire on the building of a medicines dispensary for the poor at Royal College of Physicians, has now been largely forgotten, at the time of its publication the poem was an instant success, making the writer the talk of the London coffee houses and the fashionable literary scene. The poem went through three editions within a year and eight editions appeared within Garths lifetime and the text was reprinted regularly throughout the 18th century.Samuel Johnston, in his Life of Garth, suggested that the poem appealed because of its clear moral stance. After all, Garth was on the side of charity against the intrigues of interest, and of regular learning against licentious usurpation of medical authority. With ownerships stamp of Wm Sherlock, Ormskirk, on first fly-leaf. Seconda tavola.[Venice], Ferrando Bertelli, 1565 [printed ca. 1570]. Engraved map of the Indian Ocean, Indian subcontinent and most of the Gulf region (28 x 39 cm; margins extended to 50 x 66.5 cm), at a scale of about 1:13,500,000 with north at the foot, with 3 sea monsters, a spouting whale and 3 ships in the ocean; and on the land elephants, lions and 2 people on horseback carrying spears. Although printed from a single copper plate, the present map image is divided into two parts, with a 7 mm gap between the right and left halves, so that nothing would be lost if the map were bound as a double-page plate.

[1 blank], [5], [3 blank], [20], [1 blank], [1], [78 blank] ll.Manuscript family chronicle incorporating multiple chronicles from the 17th and 18th century. The manuscript chronicles the births and deaths of four generations of the Bos, Werdolen (or Verdole) and Roda family in Amersfoort, Groningen, The Hague, Scheveningen, IJsselstijn, Tiel, Deventer, Kampen, Zuilen and Edam. The book was probably compiled by Dirk Daniel Roda (1726-1898), a lieutenant in the infantry and later beer brewer, shortly after the death of his father in 1747. It incorporates chronicles by his father Michiel Roda (1686-1747), his maternal grandfather Jacob Werdolen (chronicling 1668-1686), Jacob Werdolen's father Hendrik van Werdolen (a note from 1639) and a copy by Hendrik's wife Barbera Bos (born 1596), of the chronicle written by her father (chronicling 1577-1601).The different chronicles are interleaved with notes by Dirk Daniel Roda, which supply additional biographical information. Description:
[12], ''296'' [= 298], [2 blank] pp.First edition of a curious and extensively illustrated work on what the author calls a "horloge magnetique", a horizontal sundial with a rotating magnetic needle. He makes great (and dubious) claims for his invention: it can be used day or night, even when the sky is overcast, as long as one can make out the sun, moon or a known star. The magnetic needle did no doubt help one set it up at any location, as he claimed. The title-page notes that Pierre Georges is Chanoine régulier at the Congrégation de Notre-Sauveur, established by the archbishop of Toul in 1623 under Jesuit influence, and it also gives the Jesuit "IHS" with cross. Given that Jesuit association, the manuscript fragment used for the binding is particularly interesting, for it contains a text known from the Acta sanctorum (which is arranged by the Saints' feast days, in this case 25 July). With an early 19th-century 2-page note on a free endleaf with information about Georges, the dedicatee François…
