Description:
Japan, 1950. Portfolio Box. Very Good+. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Hiroshige. NOTE: these are the actual woodcut prints BUT this also comes with the 1965 Tuttle publication by Reiko Chiba showing each print with an explanation in English relating to each station. Two Books. Suite of 53 original woodcut prints. Each image is approximately 6 x 8 1/4" in size with a paper size of 6 5/8 x 8 3/4 inches. The paper appears to be a handmade laid paper and each is affixed to a backing sheet. Hiroshige's most popular series of woodcuts depicted the 53 way-stations on the Tokaido (the road between Edo and Kyoto of about 300 miles). It was so popular he did 19 versions of the Tokaido series - each time using different scenes but always of the same way-stations. He first produced this suite in the 1800s. The set I have for sale was printed later. NOTE: this is not a photo reproduction of the original - it was the practice in Japan to either use the original blocks or cut new blocks when… Read More

Description:
Self? date unknown. 1st Edition . Portfolio Box. Very Good. Paul Honore. Signed by Illustrator(s). A very unusual item. Paul Honore (1885-1956) was an important American printmaker, muralist and illustrator who lived and worked in Detroit for most of his career. To illustrate how a four coloured print is made, Honore printed each of the 4 blocks separately and then printed the colours on top of each other to achieve the final print. The individual sheets and a short treatise on engraving are held in a folder with the finished print on top. A cutout on the front cover with a clear plastic sheet allows one to view the finished print. Near fine mailing box with some smudges. The folio box is near fine with very minor rubbing on spine. The box appears to be covered in a coated, cloth embossed material that is coloured to appear as leather. The prints have spotting as can be seen in the photos. Size (9 x 12") will require an adjustment on shipping price.
