The book is The Adventures of David Simple. Volume The Last published in London in 1753. The book, the third in the series, was written by Sarah Fielding, an English novelist best remembered for The Governess, or The Little Female Academy; she was also the sister of the prominent author Henry Fielding. WARREN G. HARDING (1865-1923). Harding was the Twenty-Ninth President. Proof copies. 1968. No place. The proof copies of Francis Russell’s 1968 biography The Shadow Of Blooming Grove. The controversial biography is best-remembered for a lawsuit brought by the Harding family against Russell. He discovered letters between Harding and his mistress, Carrie Phillips, and Russell intended to publish excerpts of the correspondence. The Harding family successfully sued to block their disclosure, and it boosted the pre-publication publicity for the tome. The proofs are in two bound booklets and housed in a custom-made green box. There is at least one handwritten correction and the pages have the usual wear to the edges. Perfect for the Warren Harding completist!

The photo shows Florence Harding in a Girl Scout uniform on the White House balcony with her dog Laddie Boy, the first White House dog to receive regular coverage by the press. STAN LAUREL (1890-1965) and OLIVER HARDY (1892-1957). The skinny, American-born Laurel and the chubbier, British-born Hardy were one of the most popular comedy duos of early cinema. They appeared in over one hundred films together, and their most popular was probably Babes In Toyland. PS. 10 ½” x 13 ¾”. June 21, 1940. No place. An oversized black and white studio photograph signed “Stan Laurel” and “Oliver Hardy”; the Hardy is a rubber stamp signature. Laurel inscribed it “June 21st 1940. Our best wishes always Mr. Knight, Sincerely Stan Laurel” and the Hardy is a rubber stamped signature. They are shown in their famous costumes, complete with bowler hats. The Laurel signature is a bit lighter than the darker Hardy stamped signature, but both are completely legible. It is beautifully framed to an overall size of 18 ½” by 21 ½”. This photograph sold at Pacific Auctions in 1997, and it was also sold by Walter Benjamin. Laurel and Hardy photographs of this size are rare.

KENTON HARPER (1801-1867). Kenton was an editor, plantation owner, politician and military officer. He served as a Confederate general during the Civil War. Documents. 2pg. 1864. Virginia. A partly printed Confederate States of America document certifying “that Kenton Harper has paid in at this Office Six Hundred Dollars for which amount Registered Bonds of the Confederate States of America, bearing interest from this date, at the rate of four per cent per annum, will be issued to him, under the ‘Act to reduce the currency, and to authorize a new issue of notes and bonds…’”. It is signed by a financial officer. The second document is a manuscript listing the “six per cent untaxable Bonds of the Confederate States of America…the property of Kenton Harper” and then lists $10,000 worth of bonds; none of these were redeemable after the Confederacy fell, wiping out a significant portion of his net worth.

A partly-printed document signed “Benj Harrison”: “I DO Certify, That Benjamin Smith XX of Edward Clark is entitled to the properties of land allowed a Sargeant of the Continental line, for three years service”. In addition to Harrison’s signature, “Tho Merriwether” signed the document. This document represents a land grant given to a veteran of the American Revolution. According to the Library of Virginia, the state offered bounty lands for Revolutionary War military service who had served at least three years continuously in the Continental or state forces. BRET HARTE (1836-1902). Harte was a Nineteenth Century poet and author best known for writing about life in early California. 9 pages. 5 ½” x 7 ¼”. A complete set of illustrated verses from Bret Harte’s 1870 poem “Plain Language from Truthful James”, later known as “The Heathen Chinee”. The poem was intended as a satirical critique of nineteenth-century Californian prejudices against the Chinese, but it was interpreted by much of its readership as anti-Chinese and was often republished in that context. Harte himself, however, was strongly against racism. These images are from a series published in 1870 by Chicago’s Western News Company with illustrations by Joseph Hull. They pages are in fine condition with some light aging and staining.
