But not even Toni had suspected that the worm brass ring was anything more exciting than a curtain ring, or that the old stone lion would earn itself the reputation of being the only statue in Venice to have flown across Europe and touched down in the Piazza di Trafalgar in faraway England!

A scarce cyclists' map of the county of Surrey, published by George Philip & Son. In the publisher's original dark green cloth binding (lettered in gilt to the front). Externally the rear board has significant patchy fading. Internally, map is intact, and generally clean with minor marks to the reverse.
George Philip was a prolific publisher of maps and atlases of the counties of England, updating them to include railways and cyclists' routes as they began appearing in the 19th century. Complete set of five chromolithograph collecting / trade cards depicting scenes throughout Christmas Day in a comic strip. Numbered to upper right corner. Scenes range from Father Christmas standing beside a bed with 4 sleeping children (6 o'clock) through opening presents under the Christmas tree (9 o'clock) to Christmas lunch (1 o'clock) then over-excited/misbehaving children (3 o'clock and 7 o'clock). Very Good condition. Sammis & Latham was a New York publishing firm active in 1882 that issued comic card sets and juvenile novelty items.
