Description:
The definitive beatnik edition of Kafka's famous story that made Kafka a phenomenon in America sparsely but nicely illustrated by San Franciso beat generation artist Leslie Sherman. A small masterpiece of book design. Sharp, square and clean with only minor flaws that are unavoidable for a book of this age. Very small faint spot of foxing on title page, even smaller less faint spot opposite it on ffep. The merest of bumping on top and bottom of the spine. As nice a copy as I've ever seen. Top and bottom of the spine have chipping. The blank unprinted rear of DJ has acquired a patina of foxing, only moderately annoying with the worst of it on the top edge. A faint marking suggests the book spent a significant time parked next to a spiral bound volune (not included). Impression is faint, upper edge is the worst of the foxing and still comparatively very nice for this edition.

Description:
Part of the publishers' International Library of Sociology, of which numerous other volumes are described by way of Appendix. Presumed first trade edition. This gets you up to the Frankfurt School as it was discussed and taught circa 1975, meaning in my opinion you get a pretty pure shot of it from just before French theory caught up and problematized its discourse.
Perfectly nice trade paperback with a tight, square solid binding and minuscule cosmetic flaws that only a book collector would care about. And I think if you're looking at a '70s treatment of the Frankfurt School, you're probably interested in actually reading books -- but don't let me get started on that. There are some markings inside by a reader of few words but occasional shows of enthusiasm such as "Strauss" and "WOW!!"

Description:
This is Kent's account of his time in Greenland -- a cracking read, but most renowned for his illustrations, including numerous full-page monochrome plates, and over fifty chapter headings. The spine gilt recalls the famous Kent-designed edition of Moby Dick, and would look good on a shelf next to it. That would also make up for the fact that this copy doesn't have a dust jacket. (I may still have a copy with a dust jacket for sale.) Tight, square, solid hardcover bound in blue buckram with a bit of bumping on the spine corners and a tiny imperfection on the top edge of the front cover that you will never notice. Book comes with a 1920s-era transfer for the Chicgo Heights Railroad terminal. It's blank --fill it out however you like and see if it still works.

Description:
Full color pastedown on front board, full color dust jacket in effect. This 1920s edition is identical to the 1915 Houghton Mifflin first edition in its text and layout, including 80(!) line illustrations by Heath Robinson, and all eight of his full-page color plates. Book is solid, tight and square and nearly as new except for fading of the pictorial gilt spine and a minuscule tear at the top edge of the front endpapers. The faded gilt on the spine is solved, or at least put out of sight and mind, by a nice original dust jacket.
DJ is resplendent with minor chipping, small loss of paper on the spine top edge, and minor diffuse foxing -- which together make it both nicely presentable in itself and about the best DJ I've ever seen for one of these Riverside editions.

Description:
Red boards with pictorial spine, full color dust jacket. Identical to the 1915 Houghton Mifflin first edition in text, its 80 line illustrations, and most importantly, in having all eight of its full-page color plates by W. Heath Robinson.Pretty strangely near-mint in binding and interior, including all plates. Some trivial foxing in the front and rear gutters. The dust jacket, which is sort of a big deal here, is in nice shape except for a small area of missing material on the bottom spine and top front corner. These are ameliorated by a classy archival sleeve. Price-clipped.

Description:
This is a 1920s reprint of the first octavoA edition of Water Babies with the beautiful full page, full-color Goble illustrations. There's a catch: the rare and expensive 1909 quarto edition has 32 plates, whilst all subsequent editions (such as this one) have 16. I usually like to trade in books with the same full complement of plates as the first edition. I'm loose about that with Goble because his first edition books have often never been reprinted in full, leaving us to get the Goble we can, and not always the Goble we want or deserve.Red buckram boards and spine with pictorial gilt on front board. Top edge gilt. Sixteen full-page plates, including frontis, all present and in fine shape except the one facing page 35, which has come unbound and suffered some chipping on the top and right edge of its border. Book is solidly bound, straight and square. Some kid (Anita Newell) clearly enjoyed this book. Shelf and corner wear and spine cloth torn at the front board, but holding on as if by magic… Read More
