Mentored by A.E., he was encouraged to give up farming for literature, and the world is better for it . "The Green Fool" was initially published in 1938, whereupon Kavanagh was sued by Oliver St. John Gogarty for the close mentioning of Gogarty's wife with his mistress; oddly to us, Gogarty won his suit, the book was withdrawn, and later the two became good friends.
