Description:
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1925. Karel Capek's most famous work, always on any "top 10" list of great novels of speculative fiction, is "War with the Newts." He and his artist brother Joseph were prominent members of the European avant-garde, Capek (1890-1938), a Czech Jew, avoided the death camps by dying from natural causes, a fate not accorded his brother. "Krakiatit" can be read as a foreshadowing of the nuclear dilemma, with the scientific Genie once again released from its bottle. This is a Near Fine copy of the First American Edition, less common than the English version, which in itself is rare. Dark blue cloth binding with paper label on the front cover. Gilt lettering on the spine; rebacked, in a very attractive way. Originally written in Czech (1922); the translation is by Lawrence Hyde. Clean text; 408 pages. ASSOCIATION COPY: a large, interesting bookplate tipped onto the front paste-down identifies the owner as the poet Howard E. Slack. This copy… Read More

Description:
London: Martin Brian & O'Keefe, 1973. Appreciated as one of the best Irish authors of the mid-XXth Century, Paddy Kavanagh's works are elusive in the trade. Mentored by A.E., he was encouraged to give up farming for literature, and the world is better for it . "The Green Fool" was initially published in 1938, whereupon Kavanagh was sued by Oliver St. John Gogarty for the close mentioning of Gogarty's wife with his mistress; oddly to us, Gogarty won his suit, the book was withdrawn, and later the two became good friends. This is a Fine copy of the Second Printing of the 1971 reissue. Black paper-covered boards with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 350 pages. Description:
London: Hurst & Blackett Publishers, Successors to Henry Colburn, 1865. Irish novelist Julia Kavanagh (1824-1877) resided most of her life in France; her works, of which this is the eighth published, have a French sensibility. There is no publication date given, but the First Edition (1858) was issued in three volumes; Quercus therefore assumes this to be an issue from some time after the First, but the date assignation is speculative at best; and no help is offered by the online catalogs. This is a VeryGood (Plus) to Near Fine copy, presented in an attractive fine binding. Marbled boards and page ends; green leather spine and tips; ruled with gilt; five raised bands on the spine.
