Contemporay calf, Cambridge style binding, nicely rebacked, preserving original spine label. Uncommon edition of this work, well known for its complicated and convoluted publishing history. "Having become proficient in French and Italian under the instruction of another member of the Clinton household, Loveday translated into English the first three parts of La Calprenède's Cléopâtre under the title Hymen's Præludia, or, Love's Master-Piece; these appeared respectively in 1652, 1654, and 1655, and were reprinted many times. Despite the erroneous attribution of other parts of the romance to Loveday's hand in some later editions, it was only with the collaboration of John Coles that part 4 was completed and published in 1656. Translated from the French. Spine and edges of boards scuffed and lightly bumped; small chip at fore-edge of upper board. Small ink scribble in margin of p. 3; some foxing here and there, but overall internally nice and clean. A lavish production.

Paris: Garnier Freres, n.d.. Hardcover. Very Good+. Red cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on spine, with original front wrap bound in; illustrated, with 112 (of 120) plates. Boards lightly rubbed; corners bumped; some light scattered foxing throughout but, for the most part, plates are nice and bright.

Mexico City: Ediciones Botas, 1944 . First Edition. Paperback. Good+. Orginal pictorial wrappers (scattered staining). A book of poetry, lengthily inscribed to Maugham by the Labarthe in both Spanish and English. He mentions enjoying "The Razor's Edge" (published the same year as this book and draws attention to pages 68-69: "my best poem dedicated to you." Pedro Juan Labarthe López de Victoria (1905-1966) was a Puerto Rican poet, journalist, essayist, and novelist. This is a seemingly very scarce book.

Full contemporary calf, a bit rubbed, but still a nice copy. First published the previous year. A popular work in its time.

One of of 475 numbered copies, monogramed by the artist, this being copy #155. Printed on Alfama paper and containing 13 original etchings by Labisse, 8 of which are hand-colored. A beautiful copy.

Some light rubbing at extremities; a little very faint foxing scattered here and there. Otherwise book is fine. A nice, bold binding.

Some light rubbing and scuffing along spine and edges of boards; scattered foxing throughout, mostly marginal, rarely -- or only slightly -- affecting the images. An excellent copy.

Boards scuffed; spine tips and corners chipped. Just a little foxing and off-setting, but internally nice and clean overall.

Some light scuffing along joints and edges of boards; text block slightly rolled, with upper board extending about 1/4-inch beyond lower. Internally nice and clean -- chromolithographs are lovely, bright colors remain true. An excellent copy.

Historiated woodcut initials throughout. Early 19th-century quarter morocco gilt over boards; (top of spine slightly chipped, stains and soiling on covers; marginal dampstaining throughout, date due slip and card pocket removed from rear endpapers).
