Thought to originate in the 11th century, this is a 'psychological' tale of love and seduction among aristocratic society of the time and is described as 'the highest innacle of Japanese literature'. Bound in brownish/purple cloth with gilt title on the spine, some small marks, spine ends pressed and a little chipped, spine a touch faded but the gilt remains bright. There is a split along the side of the spine revealing webbing, otherwise robust and square. Hinge and text block firm, no inscriptions. The closed page edges are spotty and some foxing to the title page thereafter pages are generally smooth clean and clear although one or two spots creeping over from edges. A good sound, tidy copy.

Very clean and tid, a little wear at spine ends and corners. Gilt along top edges, other edges rough cut. Hinges and text blocks sound, webbing revealed along rear joint of Volume I. Heraldic book plate inside Volume II of Thomas Fisher Unwin (the publisher T. Fisher Unwin). A little foxing to end papers thereafter pages smooth clean and bright. Undated, circa 1890?. A very good attractive set.
