Description:
Original color proof sheet for "Little Nemo In Slumberland" printed using the era's state-of-the-art Ben-Day Dots process on coated commercial stock. The work, dating from approximately 1910, depicts a surreal and nightmarish sequence, in which green hills evolve into the back of a giant caterpillar, which then breaks apart into an army of duck-footed egg men. Image is approx. 15 x 19.25 in., on 18 x 25 in. sheet. Excellent overall, with slight edge wear at the margins. Archivally framed and matted under conservation glass. [1121]
A fantastically rare printer's proof sheet from one of the most important and influential early American comics, each one showing the placement of mechanical registration marks, used to calibrate the machines before going to press.
