Near Fine. Lovely, evocative 1885 watercolor of Harvard's original boathouse, proudly situated on the Cambridge side of the banks of the Charles River. Painted by E.M. Fairchild and signed, titled and dated in his hand at the lower left corner. Crisp, clean and very sharp, with several of Harvard's buildings (including Memorial Hall and its historic tower) looming in the background. The simple structures (by today's standards) seem sun-faded and appear to be made of wood. Some 20 years later, they would give way to thicker, more imposing brick structures and would become known as the Weld Boathouse (est. in 1906, still in use today). Handsomely matted and framed, the watercolor measures 11" wide x 9" tall. A nice piece of 19th century Harvard history.

Clean and Near Fine in a crisp, price-intact, Near Fine dustjacket. Quarto, 205 pgs. plus Bibliography and Index. Truly a collector's copy and uncommon as such, with its notable author inscription.

A handsome copy of the 1891 1st edition of this ribald, cautionary guide to marriage, both written and wonderfully illustrated thruout in rich chromolithography by H.M. Vickar. Tight, solid and VG+ in its vellum-backed decorative cloth, with bright gilt-titling to the front panel. Very light soiling to the panels, just a touch of mild offsetting at the front inner hinge. The plates are uniformly crisp and near-pristine or better. Quarto, separated into 2 halves ("Advice to the Man"/"Advice to the Woman"). The Introductory verse: "I should advise a man to pause/Before he takes a wife/In fact, I see no earthly cause/He should not pause for life."

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. Pictorial boards. Very Good +. Mabel Lucie Attwell. A handsome copy of the 1932 1st thus, the 1st appearance of the Mabel Lucie Attwell full-page color illustrations. Perhaps even more notable though, this copy also includes a sharp, very well-preserved example of the publisher's uncommon pictorial box. The book is tight and VG+ in its pictorial boards, with a small, neat 1934 Christmas day inscription from mother to daughter on the front free endpaper and a small, tasteful bookplate to the front pastedown. Otherwise clean as could be internally, with no other writing or markings to speak of and with bright, clean boards. Thick octavo, the attractive Mabel Lucie Attwell illustrations thruout. And the aforementioned publisher's box (which is largely responsible for the sharp condition of the book) is crisp and sturdy and VG+ to Near Fine, with virtually no wear to the corners or the edges. Sharp and very presentable.

Octavo, very nicely illustrated throughout by the talented Evaline Ness. Also includes the "New York Herald Tribune Children's Spring Book Festival" owl-sticker affixed to the front cover.
