Blair was President Kennedy’s Ambassador to Denmark and President Johnson’s Ambassador to the Philippines. He was also law partner with Adlai Stevenson. PS. 8” x 10”. N.d. [1964 to 1967] N.p. [Manila]. A black-and-white photograph signed “Diosdado Macapagal” and “E. M. Macapagal”. The photo depicts Macapagal and his wife Eva at a dressy diplomatic event with Ambassador to the Philippines William McCormick Blair Jr. and his glamourous wife Deeda. The President penned on the lower margin: “To Bill and Dida [sic] with affection and appreciation for their friendship for Filipinos Diosdado Macapagal E. M. Macapagal”. The image and inscription date to the end of Macapagal’s time as President of the Philippines or shortly afterwards.

A letter signed “Diosdado Macapagal” as former President of the Philippines and written on his letterhead in another hand. As William Blair prepared to leave his post as U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Macapagal sent him this warm letter thanking him for his stay. “Dear Ambassador Blair: Ms. Macapagal and I thank you beyond words can express for having us at The delightful dinner at The Embassy the other night. It was particularly memorable for us since it was on the eve of my birthday. FRANCISCO MADERO (1873-1913). Madero was a wealthy landowner who was also an author, a revolutionary and the President of Mexico from 1911 until just before his assassination. He was a long-time foe of Porfirio Diaz. AQS. 1pg. 4 ½” x 4”. No date. No place. An autograph quotation signed “F Madero” in Spanish. He wrote “Liberty is fruitful only within the law.” The quotation is matted with a portrait to an overall size of 8 ½” x 15 ½” and the condition is very fine.

JAMES MADISON (1751-1836). Madison was the Fourth President and “Father of the Constitution.” ROBERT SMITH (1757-1842). Smith was the sixth Secretary of State, serving from 1809 to 1811. DS. 1pg. 20” x 16”. March 20, 1810. New York. A four language ship’s paper signed “James Madison” as President and “R Smith” as Secretary of State. The document, printed in English, French, Spanish and Dutch, is for the brig Rose In Bloom from New York City. It was commanded by Jedediah Olcott, bound for Santillana, and laden with cotton, segars [sic], logwood and ashes. The large document is in very good condition with the usual folds, an intact seal, and a very large but slightly light James Madison autograph. There is a repaired tear in the upper left corner, and the overall condition is fine.

JAMES MADISON (1751-1836). Madison was the Fourth President after being Thomas Jefferson’s Secretary of State. He was also the Father of the Constitution. DAVID ERSKINE, 2nd BARON ERSKINE (1776-1855). Erskine was a British diplomat who served as Minister to the United States during the second half of Jefferson’s Presidency. Document. 29pgs. March 28, 1808. Department of State, Washington. A contemporary copy of a very long letter sent by James Madison as Secretary of State to David Erskine as Great Britain’s Minister to the United States. Madison’s topic was the 1807 Orders in Council, a series of trade restrictions enacted by the Privy Council of the United Kingdom in response to the Napoleonic Wars. Their detrimental effect on American commerce led to the War 1812. D. 1pg. 8 ½” x 5 ½”. October 2005. No place. A printed trading slip from Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities showing that trades were made in a client’s name in October 2005. This was mailed to the client to show how his or her money was being utilized. I do not know if these were real trades or fictitious ones. The victim’s name has been crossed out to protect his or her confidentiality. This was bought from the victim, who was wiped out. It is hard to imagine the greed and wickedness behind this modest piece of paper. I have never seen one of these before, and I suspect there are few in existence, since victims probably either destroyed them when the fraud was revealed, or they were turned in to the government to aid in prosecution, and the hopes that monies could be recovered. It is in perfect condition.

SHORTLY BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR, THE FUTURE CONFEDERATE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY WRITES A RECOMMENDATION FOR A NAVAL POSITION STEPHEN R. MALLORY (1812-1873). Mallory was a Senator from Florida and the Confederate Secretary of the Navy. ALS. 2pg. 8” x 10”. August 23, 1859. Pensacola, Florida. An autograph letter signed “S.R. Mallory” to Isaac Toucey, the Secretary of the Navy. He wrote: “Having been requested by the friends of Mr. James F. Scott, of Washington to give him a letter to you, to further his application for a clerkship, I take great pleasure in invoking your kindness and consideration in his behalf. He is the son of a former Navy Agent at Washington, (now deceased) is an able and accomplished clerk of much experience, and one in whose welfare, from the interest I feel in his sister Miss Rebecca Scott...I feel much interest. DS. (1786-1857). Marcy was Secretary of State and War, comptroller of New York, New York Governor and Senator. DS. 1pg. 7 ½" x 12 ¼". January 14, 1828. Albany. A bond signed "W.L. Marcy" as New York State Comptroller. It reads: "New York State 5 per cent Stock. State of New York Comptroller's Office... Be it Known, That the People of the State of New-York are indebted to the President, Managers and Company of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, or their order, in the sum of one thousand dollars, bearing interest at the rate of five per cent per annum... In Testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of my office, the day and year above written. W. L. Marcy. Comp." The certificate has two vertical folds that do not affect the quality of the signature. The certificate also bears a large "X" in ink between the two folds, which, it is assumed, means the debt was fulfilled. Luckily, this mark ends just above the Marcy signature, leaving it untouched. GASTON MASPERO (1846-1916). Maspero was the leading French Egyptologist of his generation and known for popularizing the term “sea peoples.” This archive consists of thirteen letters written by Gaston Maspero during the first decade of the twentieth century. From 1881-1914, Maspero was the director-general of excavations and of the antiquities of Egypt. He helped pioneer the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology in Cairo, which still exists today as a center for the study of archaeology, history, and languages of ancient Egyptian civilizations. Notable actions during his tenure included the discovery of the eroded Pyramid of Amenemhet I, the clearing of the Luxor Temple, and properly dating the Great Sphinx. Thus, this archive would be significant to any Egyptologist or student of the modern Middle East. Six of the letters are written in French and seven are written in Arabic. (BOSTON – COLONIAL MASSACHUSETTS). ADS. 1pg. 7” x 4”. 1654. No place [Boston]. An autograph document signed “Jonath: Hayne Clerk”. The document states: “Att a meeting ye Sixteenth Day of ye eleventh month 1654 Captain Keayne, Mr. Duncan, Mr. Parker, and Mr. Stoddard being prsent Henry Messenger was fined ten shillings for affirming that he had corected his sonn John for playing in ye meeting house which appears to be a lye, to prvent the Commissioners of laying any punishment upon him, ye boy himself said he was corected by his mother...”. It is marked at the conclusion “This is a true copy of the record”. The Town Commissioners were chosen to adjudicate minor offenses; the first named is probably Robert Keayne, an English militia officer and early Boston official. Nathaniel Duncan, Richard Parker, and Anthony Stoddard are all listed as Commissioners. “Sonn John” was born in 1641; his younger brother Henry Messenger, Jr. became a joiner and a chairmaker of note. EDWARD G. MATHEY (1837-1915). Mathey was an United States Army officer best known for his involvement in the 7th Regiment of Cavalry and participation in the Battle of Little Bighorn. DS. 1pg. January 8, 1878. N.p. A partially-printed document signed “E. G. Mathey” as Captain of the 7th Regiment of Cavalry. The document, filled out in another hand, concerns a private’s rations while on furlough. The 7th Regiment of Cavalry is best known for its participation in the Battle of Little Bighorn two years prior. The document is in good condition and has been repaired with tape on the verso, where it separated along the folds.

WALTER MATTHAU (1920-2000). Matthau was an American actor best known for Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple and for The Fortune Cookie. He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the latter film. Matthau had a prolific movie career and also appeared on television, including many cop shows. PS. N.d. N.p. A signed black and white photograph signed “Good luck Norman Walter Matthau” of The Odd Couple actor. The photograph is framed and in fine condition.

Two letters from Somerset Maugham to Mrs. Raymond Hamaker: a) TLS. 1pg. 5 ½” x 8”. February 4, 1954. Villa Mauresque. A typed letter signed “W.S. Maugham” to Mrs. Hamaker: “Thank you, and your husband and son, for your charming card of good wishes on my eightieth birthday. It was extremely kind of you to write to me, it gave me much pleasure.” It is in fine condition and accompanied by the original envelope. b) TLS. 1pg. 5 ½” x 8”. July 26, 1962. Villa Mauresque. A typed letter signed “W.S. Maugham” to Mrs. Hamaker: “Thank you for your charming letter and all the nice things you say. It was extremely kind of you to write to me; I was touched and much pleased.” The letter has a mailing fold and is in fine condition.

DABNEY MAURY (1822-1900). Maury was an United States and Confederate Army officer. ALS. 1pg. N.d. N.p. An autograph letter signed “Dabney Maury”. Maury wrote to Confederate General Marcus Wright (1831-1922), asking for copies of a southern magazine. “My Dear General Can you let me have the Southern magazines for May 1872 – for November 1872 – for October 1873 -? and the number of the Bivouac containing account of Forrest’s covering the escape of Hood’s Army from Nashville Your friend Dabney Maury”. The letter is in fine condition and is inlaid. A printed portrait of Maury accompanies it.

BRANTZ MAYER (1809-1879). Mayer, an American author, lawyer, and politician, wrote about the histories of Maryland, of which he was a native, and Mexico, where he briefly served as a diplomat. AD. 1pg. 8” x 13”. N.d. N.p. An autograph document by American author and historian Brantz Mayer, composed of a transcription of a 1746 document from the Maryland colony and nineteenth-century commentary on said document. The transcription is a list of Irish immigrants who came to Maryland colony in 1746 aboard the ship of a Captain Park. Three were convicts, and the rest were probably indentured servants. The document certifies that all these immigrants were of the Protestant faith. As the nineteenth-century notes state, such a certification was at one time necessary in pre-Revolutionary Maryland to avoid the fines demanded from Catholics or the masters of Catholic servants. JUSTIN McCARTHY (1830-1912). McCarthy was an Irish writer and nationalist. He was elected to Parliament in 1879 as a representative for Ireland’s County Longford, and served until 1900. He was a Home Rule supporter and a strong follower of Prime Minister Gladstone. Two letters signed by Justin McCarthy regarding his literary efforts: a) ALS. 3pg. 4 ½” x 7”. July 3, 1901. Ashleydene. PS. 10” x 8”. N.d. N.p. A photo signed “Here’s to Charlie Bard, It’s nice to meet a man as smart as I am. Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen”. The black-and-white photograph shows the puppet McCarthy shaking a spectacled man’s hand in front of an American flag as Bergen looks on. The photo may have been taken during World War II, when Bergen and McCarthy performed for troops around the world. The inscription is in white ink, the photo is framed and it in fine condition.

PETER McGILL (1789-1860). McGill was a Scottish-born Quebecois politician and businessman. He was President of the Bank of Montreal and also founded Canada’s first railroad company. There’s a district of Montreal named for McGill, though McGill University is named for someone else. ALS. 2pgs. March 26, 1834. Montreal. An autograph letter signed “Peter McGill”. McGill wrote to a James Baxter, McGill about the British American Land Company, an entity that was established in 1832 to purchase and develop lands in eastern Canada. “Dear Sir I am in receipt of your letter of 23 int for which I thank you. I am fully aware of the importance of the matters to which you advert, and you may rest assured that the Representatives of the Land Company will attend immediately to the ameleorations you suggest. THOMAS McKEAN (1734-1817). McKean was a Declaration Signer and Continental Congressman, and Governor from Delaware and Pennsylvania. DS. 1pg. August 16, 1808. Pennsylvania. A partially-printed legal document signed “Tho M.Kean” as Governor of Pennsylvania. THOMAS L. McKENNEY (1785-1859). McKenney was the Superintendent of Indian Affairs from 1824 to 1830 and a scholar of Native American culture. He co-authored History of the Indian Tribes of North America. ALS. 1pg. June 20, 1817. Office of Indian Trade, Georgetown. An autograph letter signed “Tho L McKenney” as Superintendent of Indian Trade. Writing to McKenney requests a change in record-keeping format at a Tennessee factory. “Sir, Your accounts have been received up to 31st March – 1817 - . This is to request the favor of you to vary your method of keeping your produce acct. – and state what the articles are you receive in exchange, what their prices, and what their quantity. This will enable us at the office to detect any errors that may make you at the factory. Without this, it is impossible to do so. Respectfully Tho L McKenney”.
